How to Get the Best Business Bank Account in 2026

The best business bank account gives your company an account in its own name, cards for the team and low-cost local payments. At a bank, deposits are protected up to £120,000 in the UK, €100,000 in the EU or $250,000 in the US. The right account also holds several currencies, so clients abroad pay you without a conversion on every invoice.

Getting one is the hard part. High street banks want owners who live in the country, a local credit history and often a branch visit. Bank of America does not accept foreign business customers. Reviews take weeks, and refusals are common and rarely explained.

This is where we come in. Our regulated banking partners open multi-currency accounts for small and international companies in days to about a week, fully online, with no minimum balance on published plans. We handle the work: the KYC file, the company documents, the source of funds and every question from the partner. You send the details, and we open the account with you.

Our top-rated, licensed banking providers open multi-currency business accounts for small companies in days to about a week, fully online, with owners in most countries and no branch visit.

What Makes the Best Business Bank Account

The best business bank account is the one that accepts your company, charges little for the way you pay and get paid, and opens when you need it. Five things decide it: who the bank accepts, the fee after any free period, payment and currency charges, how your money is protected, and how fast the account opens.

Who the Best Bank for a Business Account Accepts

Start with the rules, not the price. The best bank for a business account is no use if your company fails its test. NatWest wants at least one UK resident on the application and a business registered for UK tax. HSBC UK's Small Business Banking Account needs UK tax residence and a credit check. Bank of America says applicants should be US residents, and that foreign business customers cannot apply. Drop any bank whose test you fail.

The Monthly Fee After the Free Period

Free periods end. Barclays charges nothing for 12 months, then £8.50 a month. HSBC UK's Business Banking Account is free for 12 months, then £10 a month. Bank of America charges no fee for the first 12 months of its Business Advantage Fundamentals account, then $16 a month unless you keep a $5,000 average balance or spend $500 on the business debit card. NatWest gives eligible start-ups and switchers 2 years of free everyday banking. Price the account on year two. Our guide to free business bank accounts looks at the no-fee options.

Payment and Currency Charges

For a small business with clients or suppliers abroad, the monthly fee is the smallest cost. Barclays charges £15 for an international payment made online and up to 2% to convert currency. Chase charges $40 for an outgoing international wire in US dollars made online, and Bank of America charges $45. A multi-currency business account lets you hold the currencies you earn and convert only when you choose.

Deposit Protection or Safeguarding

At a bank, the FSCS protects up to £120,000 per eligible depositor at each UK bank since 1 December 2025, EU schemes protect €100,000 per depositor per bank, and the FDIC covers $250,000 per depositor, per bank, for each ownership category in the US. Licensed e-money institutions, including our partners, must safeguard client money instead, keeping it apart from their own funds, with no deposit guarantee.

How Fast a Small Business Bank Account Opens

A simple file from a local resident can open within a day at a high street bank. A file with owners abroad or a parent company takes weeks at most banks, or never opens. Our partners open a complete file online in 2 to 3 business days at one partner and about a week at the other.

Read more: how to open a business bank account and the business bank account requirements banks apply.

Why Small Business Bank Accounts Are Hard to Open

Small business bank accounts are hard to open because high street banks are built for one customer: a company owned by people who live in the bank's country, with a local credit history and simple ownership. Each point you miss adds questions, a branch visit or a refusal, and every one is fixable with the right route and a complete file.

Banks Want Local Owners and Directors

Barclays asks applicants to have the right to live in the UK permanently and to give three years of UK addresses. NatWest needs a UK resident on the application. Bank of America wants the company formed in the US, run from the US and applied for by US residents. A founder abroad fails these tests at once, which is why a business bank account for non-residents works differently.

Credit Checks and Address History

NatWest turns away applicants who have been declared bankrupt or have a County Court Judgment, and HSBC UK's small business account is subject to a credit check. A founder who lives elsewhere has little or no UK credit file to score, so the answer is often no. Our guide to a business bank account with bad credit covers the options when the credit file is the problem.

Open a Small Business Bank Account Remotely

You can open a small business bank account without a local address or a branch visit. This is what we do for you.

  • No local resident needed: Our partners take companies whose owners and directors live abroad.
  • Open in days: 2 to 3 business days at one partner, about a week at the other.
  • No credit history test: Approval rests on your KYC file, not on years of local addresses.
  • Multi-currency from day one: Euros, pounds, dollars and more, with a dedicated IBAN.
  • No minimum balance: Nothing locked away on published plans to avoid a fee.
  • KYC file prepared: We tell you what to send and check it before it goes.

Group Structures and Branch Visits

Chase lets single-owner companies apply online, but an LLC or corporation owned by another business must apply in a US branch. Bank of Ireland lets sole traders apply online, while limited companies must apply through a business adviser. For a holding company or a group with owners in several countries, that means travel or weeks of back and forth.

Sectors and Refusals

Many banks will not take crypto, gambling or money services businesses at all, whatever the file looks like. One of our partners accepts gambling, betting, casino and crypto businesses. Refusals are common for ordinary businesses too. In its September 2023 review, the FCA found that UK firms in the central range declined between 0.2% and 11.4% of business account applications, and banks rarely explain why. Our guide on why banks reject business account applications lists the usual reasons, and every one can be fixed before you apply.

What to Do After a Refusal

A refusal is fixable. Work out which rule you missed, and do not send the same file to three more banks at once. Close the gap, whether that is a missing ownership chart, an unexplained source of funds or the resident director the bank wanted. In the meantime, a partner account lets the company get paid and pay suppliers, and a local bank can follow later.

Business Bank Account Comparison

This business bank account comparison covers well-known banks in the three markets our readers use most: the UK, Ireland and the US. Every figure comes from the bank's own published tariff or account page. Read the middle columns before the fee, because they decide whether the bank will take your company at all.

The fees sit close together, from nothing to about £10 or $16 a month, while the rules on who each bank takes are very different. A UK-resident sole trader with a UK credit history fits the UK banks in the table. A UK company whose only director lives in Dubai fails the residency rules at NatWest and Barclays, and a US LLC owned by a founder in Germany cannot apply to Bank of America. Price matters less than these rules, because the rules decide whether you get an account at all. For the UK in more depth, see our guide to the best business bank accounts in the UK, and for Ireland, our guide to business bank accounts in Ireland for new companies.

Fees on Every International Payment

Barclays charges £15 online and £25 in a branch for an international payment, plus £4 to £12 more when you pay the overseas bank's charges. Bank of Ireland's schedule effective 14 September 2026 charges €12.50 to €17.50 for a standard payment outside SEPA and €37.50 to €42.50 for an urgent one. Chase charges $40 online and $50 in a branch for an international wire in US dollars, and $15 to receive one.

Currency Margins

The exchange rate hides a second fee. Barclays applies a conversion charge of up to 2% for business customers, and Bank of America states that it profits from a markup built into its exchange rate. Debit card spending in other currencies costs 2.75% at Barclays and at NatWest.

Minimum Balances to Avoid the Fee

US banks tie the fee to your balance. Chase waives its $15 fee if you keep $2,000 in the account at the end of every business day, and Bank of America waives its $16 fee on a $5,000 average balance. That is cash a small business cannot use. Our guide to opening a bank account for a Delaware or Wyoming LLC covers the US route.

Which Bank Is Best for a Business Account

There is no single answer to which bank is best for a business account. For a resident owner who trades in one currency, a high street bank with a free period is usually the cheapest choice. For a small company with owners abroad or an international business bank account, the best business account is usually one of our partners' accounts, opened in days to about a week with no minimum balance.

A Faster and Cheaper Way to Open a Small Business Bank Account

For most small, international and non-resident companies, the best small business bank account is not at a high street bank. Our banking partners are electronic money institutions licensed in the EU, one authorised by the Central Bank of Cyprus and one licensed by the Malta Financial Services Authority. They open multi-currency accounts online in 2 to 3 business days at one partner and about a week at the other, with no minimum balance on published plans.

We do the application work with you. We check that your company and its owners fit the partner, build the KYC file from the documents you already hold, answer the partner's questions and tell you when the account is live. Published plans cost about €30 to €50 a month, plus a one-off onboarding fee from €500.

The route is cheaper where international companies lose the most money. Currency conversion costs 0.8% to 1% over the interbank rate at one partner, against up to 2% at Barclays, several currencies sit in one account, and no balance has to sit idle. It is not cheaper to open, and a single small SWIFT payment costs €25 plus 0.10% to 0.15% at one partner, against £15 online at Barclays. Be clear on what this route does not do. E-money and payment institutions do not lend and do not handle cash, and client money is safeguarded rather than covered by deposit insurance. Companies that need a loan or cash deposits keep a local bank alongside.

The table is fair both ways. A high street bank costs less per month for a resident owner, often nothing in the first year, and it offers lending, cash deposits and deposit insurance. Our partners win on speed, on who they accept, on holding several currencies in one account and on currency conversion. Read more on a business bank account vs an EMI account.

Opening the Account Remotely

Each director verifies their identity online. We upload the company documents, and the partner reviews one complete file. Read how to open a business bank account remotely.

How Client Money Is Protected

Both partners must safeguard client money by law, keeping it apart from their own funds, and one holds it in segregated accounts at European banks. They do not lend it out or pay interest on it. One partner gives each company a dedicated IBAN in its own name, the other issues multi-bank virtual IBANs, and our guide to IBAN accounts for businesses explains how they work for clients and suppliers.

Documents Needed for a Small Business Bank Account

Banks and our partners ask for the same three groups of documents: the company's records, identity evidence for each person behind it, and proof of what the business does and where its money comes from. A complete file is the quickest way to an approval.

Company Documents

Expect to provide the certificate of incorporation, the articles, the registers and a recent registry extract, plus an ownership chart where another company owns shares. Chase asks for formation documents that show the legal business name, the state of registration and the registration date.

Documents for Each Owner and Director

Each director and each owner with 25% or more gives a passport and a recent proof of home address. Bank of America asks for personal details, including the Social Security Number, for everyone with 25% or more and for the controlling manager. Chase accepts an SSN, an ITIN for non-US citizens or an EIN as the tax number, and says it may ask non-US citizens for extra ID.

Proof of the Business and Its Money

Show what the company does and how money moves: a website, a contract or invoice, and a short note on customers, countries and expected monthly volumes. The full checklist:

  • Certificate of incorporation and articles of association
  • A recent registry extract and the register of shareholders and directors
  • An ownership chart traced to every owner with 25% or more
  • Passport and proof of address for each director and owner
  • Proof of activity, such as a website, contracts or invoices
  • Source of funds and expected monthly volumes by currency

Read more: documents needed to open a business bank account.

Prepare Your Small Business Account File

Most delays come from the paperwork, not the company. We fix the gaps before anything is sent.

  • Avoid a refusal: We check the file against the partner's rules before you apply.
  • Ownership mapped: Every shareholder traced to the people who own the company.
  • Company records in order: Articles, registers and the registry extract checked.
  • Source of funds evidenced: Contracts, invoices and statements, not a vague summary.
  • Fewer questions: One complete submission instead of rounds of follow-ups.
  • Owners abroad welcome: Foreign documents handled as routine work.

What the Best Business Bank Account Costs

The best business bank account is cheap to hold and can be expensive to use across borders. High street fees run from nothing to about £10 or $16 a month, but international payments, currency margins, balance rules and cash fees cost far more over a year. The table sets published bank charges against our partners' plans.

The bank column comes from each bank's current published tariff, listed in the Sources. The partner column comes from our partners' published plans. Treat both as planning ranges: we confirm your final price in writing before you apply.

For a company that moves money abroad, the cost sits outside the monthly fee. Converting £300,000 a year costs up to £6,000 at Barclays' 2%, against £2,400 to £3,000 at 0.8% to 1% with one of our partners. In the US, keeping $5,000 idle to waive a $16 fee ties up cash that could pay a supplier.

To be fair to the banks, opening is free there, against a one-off onboarding fee from €500 with our partners, and a single small SWIFT payment costs less: £15 online at Barclays, against €25 plus 0.10% to 0.15% at one partner. A resident business that only uses one currency will often pay less at a high street bank. The partner route costs less for companies that convert currency regularly, hold several currencies or cannot open a local bank account at all. If you send many small SWIFT payments, ask us for a custom quote. Read more on business bank account fees.

How Long It Takes to Open a Small Business Bank Account

A small business bank account can open in a day at a high street bank for a simple local file. HSBC UK opened 65% of its small business accounts within 24 hours between March and May 2026. Files with owners abroad or a parent company take weeks or never open. Our partners open a complete file in 2 to 3 business days at one partner and about a week at the other.

Stage

Local bank

Our partners

Forming the company

Days to weeks, depending on the country

Decision on owners abroad or a group

Weeks of questions, or not accepted at all

Switching from another UK bank

7 working days under the Current Account Switch Service

Runs beside your existing account from day one

The gap is widest for the files banks see least: owners abroad, a parent company or several currencies. That is where a partner account saves weeks.

What Slows It Down

Delays come from the same few gaps: a director abroad, an owner that is another company, a proof of address the bank cannot verify, a missing source of funds or an activity the bank wants to review. Each question adds days, and a late answer sends the file back to the queue.

How to Speed It Up

Form the company first, collect every owner's documents in one round, and write down your expected volumes by currency before you apply. Send one complete file to a provider whose rules you meet, rather than to several banks at once. If the company needs to invoice now, open a partner account first. What Happens After the Account Is Open

Once the account is live, the bank or partner keeps reviewing it. Fees change when free periods end, and changes to owners, activity or volumes must be reported, so plan for both from the first month.

When the Free Period Ends

High street accounts move to the standard tariff automatically: £8.50 a month at Barclays, £10 at HSBC UK's Business Banking Account and $16 at Bank of America unless you meet a waiver. NatWest promises at least 60 days' notice of changes to its service charges. Put the end date in your calendar and check then whether you still hold the best business account for your needs.

Reviews and Changes to Report

Banks and partners run periodic reviews and ask for updated documents. Tell them before you add an owner, change the activity or move much larger sums, because an unexplained change can trigger a hold on payments.

Switching Banks Later

In the UK, the Current Account Switch Service moves your payments and balance in 7 working days for businesses with turnover up to £6.5 million and fewer than 50 employees. NatWest gives switchers with turnover up to £2 million 2 years of free everyday banking. Our guide on how to switch business bank accounts without disruption covers the steps.

Why the Company Comes Before the Account

No bank and no partner opens a company account before the company exists. Every application asks for the registration number, the articles and the owners, so the order is always company first and account second. Where you register also decides which banks will look at you. Our guide on how to set up a company as a non-resident explains the choices, and we can handle company formation with a bank account together, building the bank file while the registry processes the company.

Common Mistakes When Choosing the Best Business Bank Account

Most problems start before the application. These are the mistakes we see most often.

Choosing the Best Small Business Bank Account on Price Alone

Founders often pick the account with the lowest monthly fee, which is rarely the cheapest for a company that trades abroad. A free account that converts at up to 2% costs far more than a plan at €50 a month for a company that converts its income. On £20,000 a month, 2% is £4,800 a year, against £1,920 to £2,400 at 0.8% to 1% with one of our partners. That gap is far larger than €600 a year in plan fees plus a one-off €500 onboarding fee. Price a normal year of your own payments and conversions, then pick the account with the lowest total cost for the way you trade.

Forgetting That the Free Period Ends

Twelve months free at Barclays, HSBC UK and Bank of America, or 2 years at NatWest, all end. A company that chose a bank for its free offer can end up on a tariff that no longer suits it: £8.50 a month at Barclays, £10 at HSBC UK's Business Banking Account and $16 at Bank of America. At NatWest, for accounts opened from 20 April 2026, a start-up's free banking also stops if cash paid in passes £200,000 in 12 months. Diary the date, and run your business bank account comparison again before the first full-price month.

Ignoring Who the Bank Accepts

Many founders apply to the best-known bank in the market and find out later that it wanted a local resident, a US address or a single owner. Bank of America does not take foreign business customers, Chase sends companies owned by another business to a branch, and Barclays asks for three years of UK addresses. Read the eligibility page first. It takes five minutes and saves weeks. Our partners have rules too, and we check your company against them before you apply, so no application is wasted.

Get Help With the Best Business Account for Small Business

Not sure which route fits your company? Send us your details and we get back to you with the route that works.

  • Hard cases welcome: Owners abroad, a parent company or several directors.
  • Costs on your volumes: Fees, wires and currency priced on how you trade.
  • Company formed first: We can register the company and build the bank file together.
  • Bank and partner together: A local bank for cash or lending, a partner for currencies.
  • One point of contact: From your first request to the first payment.

Bottom Line

The best business bank account depends on four things: where the company is registered, where the owners live, the currencies you trade in, and what you pay after any free period. For a resident owner with a simple local company, a high street bank can be the cheapest choice: from nothing to £10 a month in the UK, €15 a quarter at Bank of Ireland and $15 to $16 in the US unless you hold a set balance.

For most small, international or non-resident companies, the best business account is a regulated partner account: opened online in days to about a week, in several currencies and with no minimum balance on published plans. We prepare the file, open the account with you and can form the company first.
