Netherlands Business Bank Account 2026

Netherlands Business Bank Account 2026

A business bank account in the Netherlands gives a Dutch BV a local IBAN, euro payments across the SEPA area and a banking partner that Dutch clients, suppliers and the tax office recognise. Deposits are protected up to €100,000 per bank, and a BV is covered separately from its owners. KVK says a BV or NV must have one.

The hard part is getting one. Dutch banks need a KVK number before they will look at you, many want the owners living in the Netherlands, and foreign legal forms pay extra due diligence fees. Refusals are common: in 2021 the largest Dutch banks turned away about 34,000 applicants, 15,000 of them businesses, and ABN AMRO charges €270 a month to companies with owners outside the EEA.

You do not need to work through any of that alone. We prepare your file and place it with our regulated banking partners, who open multi-currency accounts with EU IBANs in days. One team handles it, and we get it done.

Our top-rated, licensed banking providers open euro and multi-currency accounts for Dutch and foreign companies online in days, with no residency proof needed at one of them.

Why a Netherlands Business Bank Account Is Hard for Non-Residents

A Netherlands business bank account is hard for non-residents because Dutch banks carry some of the strictest anti-money laundering duties in Europe and have paid heavily for past failures. They build their accounts around Dutch-resident owners with simple structures, and they review everyone else slowly, charge them more, or turn them away.

You Need a KVK Number First

The Dutch Banking Association is clear: "It is not possible to apply for a business account without a Chamber of Commerce number." A BV is set up by a notary, who registers the company, its directors and its ultimate beneficial owners with KVK. Registration costs a one-off €85.15 in 2026. A foreign company that trades in the Netherlands also needs a KVK registration before a Dutch bank will open an account.

Residency Rules Shut Out Owners Abroad

Many Dutch accounts are closed to owners who live elsewhere. Knab requires that you live in the Netherlands and hold a BSN. bunq will not open a business account if any beneficial owner or non-executive lives outside the EEA. Rabobank's ZZP account needs an owner living in the Netherlands, and Triodos does not accept organisations established outside the Netherlands. The government's own business portal warns that some banks require a permanent Dutch address and a Dutch business address.

Open a Business Bank Account in the Netherlands

You can open a business bank account in the Netherlands for your company without a Dutch address or a branch visit. This is what we do for you.

  • No residency proof at one partner: Owners can live in most countries.
  • EU IBANs: Receive and pay euros across SEPA from day one.
  • Banks slow to onboard: An account in days, not two to eight weeks.
  • More than euros: EUR, GBP, USD and more in one account.
  • No non-resident surcharge: Published plans, no €270 monthly add-on.
  • Clear pricing, no surprises: One quote before we start.

Dutch Banks Were Fined for Weak Checks

The caution has a history. ING settled with Dutch prosecutors for €775 million in 2018 over money laundering failures, and ABN AMRO paid €480 million in 2021, after prosecutors found it had classified the risk of many of its clients incorrectly. By 2021 the four largest Dutch banks were spending more than €1.1 billion a year and employing more than 10,000 people on anti-money laundering work. A bank that has paid fines of that size does not take chances on files it cannot read.

Refusals and Exits Are Common

The Dutch central bank found that in 2021 the four largest banks refused about 34,000 potential customers for all reasons, including about 15,000 businesses, and ended relationships with 3,600 business clients for anti-money laundering reasons. Financial holding companies topped the list of exits. In 2023, the Netherlands Institute for Human Rights ruled that Rabobank had discriminated on nationality by automatically rejecting a foundation whose directors did not live in the Netherlands.

The NVB Quick Scan Is Not a Shortcut

ABN AMRO, ING and Rabobank run a Quick Scan for foreign entrepreneurs, but it is narrow. It is open only to founders supported by the Netherlands Foreign Investment Agency or a recognised startup facilitator, who are already registering with KVK and getting a residence permit. The banks promise an answer on eligibility within five working days, and the Dutch Banking Association says plainly that it is not an accelerated route to becoming a customer. Most foreign owners of a Dutch BV do not qualify for it at all.

Why Dutch Business Account Applications Get Refused

Most refusals come from the same gaps: no KVK registration, owners living outside the Netherlands or the EEA, a foreign company in the ownership chain, a source of funds that is not evidenced, or a sector the bank does not serve. KVK itself says a bank may refuse when it finds unacceptable integrity risks. Dutch banks agreed in December 2025 to explain refusals more clearly, but you still have to fix the file before another bank will say yes.

Netherlands Banks for Business Accounts

Choosing the best business bank account in the Netherlands depends first on where the owners live. For Dutch-resident owners with a simple BV, the local banks are quick and cheap. For owners abroad, most of them say no or charge heavily. The table shows what each bank publishes.

Bank

Who it takes

Who it turns away

Monthly fee

ING

Dutch-registered businesses, and foreign founders through the NVB Quick Scan

Companies without a KVK registration

€9.90, plus €0.14 per transaction

ABN AMRO

BVs, NVs, sole traders and partnerships under €25 million turnover

Companies without a KVK registration

€9.90 to €22.25, plus €110 to €270 a month for non-residents

Rabobank

All legal forms with a KVK number

Owners abroad on its ZZP account

From €9.95

bunq

Businesses registered in the Netherlands and eight other EU countries

Any UBO or non-executive living outside the EEA, or more than four ownership layers

€7.99 to €23.99

Knab

Sole traders and BVs with one director who owns 100%

Owners without a BSN or Dutch address, and structures with a foreign entity

€11 per BV

Triodos

Dutch organisations that fit its mission

Organisations established abroad or with a foreign legal form in the structure

€12.50

ASN Bank

Businesses with a KVK number and registered UBOs

Companies that have not registered their UBOs

€10.70

The low package prices in the table are for Dutch-resident owners with a Dutch BV. For owners abroad, the real price is the surcharges and due diligence fees on top, and many of these accounts are simply not available. De Volksbank became ASN Bank on 1 July 2025, so SNS business customers now go to ASN.

Due Diligence Fees on Top of the Package

Dutch banks charge a monthly fee for checking you, on top of the account. ABN AMRO charges €6.50 a month for a BV and €20 for a foreign legal form, excluding VAT. Rabobank charges €8.75 for a BV and €24 for a foreign legal form, also excluding VAT. Triodos charges €7.50 for a BV and €20 for a foreign legal form, and ASN charges €6.95 for a BV.

Non-Resident Surcharges

ABN AMRO's 2026 tariff sheet charges €105 a month per company for international residents, €110 a month for non-residents in the EEA and €270 a month for non-residents outside the EEA. It introduced the charges in 2020, citing the cost of keeping client files current and running anti-money laundering checks. At €270 a month, the surcharge alone costs €3,240 a year.

High Fees on Payments Outside SEPA

Euro payments inside SEPA are cheap in the Netherlands. Everything else is not. ABN AMRO charges €12 for each payment in or out of the SEPA area, plus €20 extra on some payments. Rabobank charges €12 each way. Knab charges €15 plus 0.1% for payments outside SEPA, and Triodos charges €17.50 plus 0.1% when you pay all the costs. Card payments in other currencies carry a 1% to 1.4% margin.

Weeks of Review

The government's business portal says approval "can take some time, often between 2 to 8 weeks". Rabobank and ASN decide in one or two working days for Dutch-resident owners with a standard file, and Knab takes about five working days. ABN AMRO lets you apply online in five minutes but publishes no decision time, Triodos says its process usually takes several weeks, and files with owners abroad take longest everywhere.

A Faster and Cheaper Way to Open a Netherlands Business Account

There is a better alternative to the Dutch bank queue. Our regulated banking partners are licensed payment and e-money institutions built for international companies. One of them issues local Dutch IBANs to non-residents, asks for no proof of Dutch or EEA residency, and accepts shareholders and directors from over 190 countries. The other serves EU companies through a payment institution supervised by the National Bank of Belgium. Both open a Netherlands business account in days, fully online, and work as an international business bank account in the Netherlands from the first day, with several currencies in one place.

We prepare the file before the partner sees it: the KVK extract, articles, shareholder register and UBO report, the owners' identity documents, what the business does and a written source of funds. Because the usual questions are answered upfront, the review happens once. Client money is kept in safeguarding accounts at major banks, separate from the partner's own funds.

Under the SEPA rules, a payer or payee in the EU may not insist that your euro account sits in a particular member state. A Dutch or other EU IBAN from a partner works for your Dutch clients and suppliers.

For a Dutch BV with owners abroad, or any company paying across borders, our partners are faster and cheaper. A Dutch bank can still be cheaper for a Dutch-resident owner with a simple BV that only pays in euros.

Keeping a Dutch Bank Alongside

Some companies keep a Dutch bank as well, for local lending, cash deposits or a long relationship with a Dutch lender. That works well: the partner account handles international payments and currencies, and the Dutch account handles what only a local bank can do. We can tell you whether your company needs both before you apply, so you do not pay two sets of fees for nothing.

Which Companies Our Partners Accept

Our partners' standard plans are built for companies incorporated in the UK, the EU or the UAE, so a Dutch BV fits, subject to the usual checks. Owners and directors can live in most countries, apart from a short restricted list. What they will not take is a shell company, hidden owners, money with no clear source, or a prohibited industry such as gambling, crypto, adult content or weapons. We check the fit before you apply.

How to Open a Business Bank Account in the Netherlands Online

To open a business bank account in the Netherlands online through us, the directors verify their identity with a passport and a live selfie and sign electronically, which takes about half an hour. We upload the company documents, answer the partner's questions and tell you when the account is live. There is no branch visit and no Dutch address needed.

Documents for a Netherlands Business Bank Account

The documents for a Netherlands business bank account follow KVK's own list, plus the personal documents every bank asks for. We gather them with you so they arrive complete and in order.

Company Documents

For a BV or NV, KVK lists a copy of the articles of association, the register of shareholders, the KVK number, a KVK UBO report and, where the account will be used abroad, a list of the countries you do business in. Some banks also ask for a KVK business register extract, and ASN asks for annual figures or a tax return no older than two years.

Owners, Directors and Signatories

Each director, signatory and ultimate beneficial owner provides a valid passport or ID card and proof of home address. Entrepreneurs from outside the EU may need a visa or residence permit as well. Check that the UBOs you declare match the KVK UBO register. The register has not been public since the EU Court of Justice ruling of 22 November 2022, but banks and the authorities still use it, and an authorised signatory can order the company's own UBO extract from KVK for €3.10. Companies set up before 27 September 2020 also had to register their UBOs, and ABN AMRO reminds applicants of this on its account opening page.

The Business and the Money

Dutch banks often ask about the purpose of the account, where the invested capital came from and who has an interest in the company. Describe what the company does, where its customers and suppliers are and the payments you expect, then write the source of funds with evidence.

Prepare Your Netherlands Business Bank Account File

A Netherlands business bank account opens fastest when the KVK records and the file tell the same story. We prepare it with you.

  • KVK pack: Extract, articles, shareholder register and UBO report.
  • Owners verified: Identity and address documents for every UBO.
  • Source of funds written: Clear, evidenced and in the format reviewers use.
  • Business proof: Contracts, invoices and a plain description.
  • Countries listed: Where you trade, as KVK suggests.

Netherlands Business Bank Account Costs

A Netherlands business bank account looks cheap on the package price, and for a Dutch-resident owner the best business bank account in the Netherlands may well be a local one. For owners abroad, the real cost is in due diligence fees, non-resident surcharges and payments outside SEPA. The table sets typical ranges at Dutch banks against our partners' published plans.

For a Dutch-resident owner with a simple BV, a Dutch bank is often cheaper, and it is fair to say so. For a BV with owners outside the EEA, ABN AMRO's non-resident surcharge alone comes to €3,240 a year before a single payment, more than a year on most partner plans. For an international business bank account in the Netherlands, payments outside SEPA add €12 to €20 each, and the currency margin adds more: 1% on €500,000 of foreign currency payments a year costs €5,000. All figures are planning ranges drawn from published tariffs, and we confirm your final price in writing before you apply.

How Long a Netherlands Business Bank Account Takes

A Netherlands business bank account takes between one working day and eight weeks at a Dutch bank. The fast end is for Dutch-resident owners with a standard BV, and files with owners abroad sit at the slow end or are refused. With our partners, the account opens in days once the documents are complete.

What Slows It Down

The usual delays are UBOs missing from the KVK register, owners who live abroad, a foreign company in the ownership chain, and a source of funds with no evidence. Every missing item restarts part of the review.

How to Speed It Up

Register the BV and its UBOs first, collect every document in one round, and answer questions the same day. Apply once, to a provider that accepts your owners' countries.

What Happens After the Account Is Open

After the account opens, fund it, add your users and share the IBAN with clients, suppliers and the tax office. Some partner plans ask for a first deposit within 30 days, and we confirm the amount before you sign.

Keep the BV in good standing, because banks and partners check it at every review. File the corporate income tax return every year, at 19% on profits up to €200,000 and 25.8% above, and charge VAT at 21% where it applies. Update the KVK UBO register when owners change, and tell your provider about new owners, directors or activities before the payments change.

Access is also improving. In December 2025, Dutch banks agreed with business groups to explain refusals, aim to decide on most complete applications within two weeks, and refer refused applicants to a KVK help desk. A legal right to a basic business payment account for EU businesses registered with KVK is expected from 1 January 2027, though banks can still refuse on money laundering, integrity or sanctions grounds.

Read more: Germany business bank account for foreign companies and Belgium business bank account.

Why the BV Comes Before the Account

A Dutch bank cannot review a company that is not on the KVK register, and neither can most partners. A BV needs a notarial deed, at least €0.01 of paid-up capital, a KVK registration and its UBOs filed before the account. The notary files the directors and UBOs with KVK as part of the registration, so ask for the KVK extract and the UBO report as soon as the deed is signed. They are the first documents any bank or partner will ask for. Get the company registered first, then open the account with a complete file straight after.

Common Netherlands Business Bank Account Mistakes

Most problems with a Netherlands business bank account come from applying to the wrong bank with the wrong file. These are the mistakes we see most.

Applying Before the UBOs Are Registered

Banks check the KVK UBO register, and ASN, for example, will not open an account until the UBOs are registered. File them first.

Applying to an Account Built for Residents

Knab, bunq and the Rabobank ZZP account all set residency conditions. A company with owners abroad is refused by the rules before anyone reads the file.

Ignoring the Surcharges

A €9.90 package can cost €280 a month once the non-resident surcharge is added. Check the full tariff sheet, not the headline price.

Putting a Foreign Company in the Chain Without Explaining It

A foreign holding company above the BV triggers higher due diligence fees and, at some banks, a refusal. Show every layer and why it is there.

Paying in Other Currencies Through a Euro Account

A euro account at a Dutch bank charges for every payment outside SEPA and every conversion. Plan the currencies before you choose.

Get Help With a Netherlands Business Bank Account

Dutch banking is very manageable when the file and the provider fit your owners. Talk to us before you apply.

  • Fit checked first: We confirm a partner can bank your BV.
  • Owners abroad: Foreign directors and UBOs are fine.
  • Refused before: We review the file and fix the gaps.
  • Honest advice: We tell you when a Dutch bank is the cheaper choice.
  • One point of contact: From the first call to the first payment.

Bottom Line

A business bank account in the Netherlands is easy for a Dutch-resident owner with a simple BV and hard for almost everyone else. Dutch banks need a KVK number, often want Dutch residence, charge extra for foreign legal forms and non-residents, and refuse thousands of business applicants a year. A new legal right to a basic account from 2027 will help EU businesses registered with KVK, but it will not remove the money laundering checks that stop most files.

For a Dutch BV with owners abroad, or any company that trades across borders, the faster route is a regulated partner that issues EU IBANs, including Dutch ones, without residency proof. With a complete file, the account opens in days, and you can open a Netherlands business account without setting foot in a branch.
