How to Open a Bank Account for Investment Funds in 2026

A bank account for investment funds is where investors' money meets the deal. Capital calls and subscriptions come in, investments are paid for, fees go to the manager and distributions go back to investors. Most funds need more than one account: one in the fund's name, one for the manager or general partner, and often a depositary. The right account holds several currencies and keeps investor money apart from everything else.

The hard part is the bank. A fund has investors in many countries, a manager who may be new, and often an offshore home. Silicon Valley Bank, whose deposits came mostly from venture-backed businesses, collapsed in 2023, Revolut Business lists special purpose vehicles as unsupported, and Airwallex needs prior approval for fund management.

You do not need to do that alone. We prepare the fund's file, from the offering documents to the investor profile, and place it with our regulated banking partner, which specialises in funds and complex structures and opens multi-currency accounts in about a week.

Our top-rated, licensed banking provider for complex structures opens multi-currency accounts for investment funds in about a week, with no branch visit and investors in most countries.

Why Banking for Investment Funds Is Hard

Banking for investment funds is hard because a fund is not one customer. It is a vehicle, a manager, a general partner, an administrator and a list of investors that changes with every close. The bank has to identify the people who control the fund, understand where the investors' money comes from and be comfortable with the country the fund calls home.

A Fund Needs More Than One Account

EU rules require a single depositary for each alternative investment fund, and the depositary must check that "All cash of the AIF has been booked in cash accounts opened in the name of the AIF or in the name of the AIFM acting on behalf of the AIF or in the name of the depositary acting on behalf of the AIF". The depositary must be an EU credit institution, an EU investment firm or another supervised institution. On top of the fund's own account, the manager and the general partner each run their own. One US fund banking provider sells "fund, GP, and management company accounts in one login" for that reason.

Investors Sit Behind the Fund

UK money laundering rules treat anyone entitled to more than 25% of a partnership's capital or profits, or who otherwise controls its management, as a beneficial owner. For a limited partnership fund, that catches any investor above 25%, such as a large anchor investor, and whoever controls the general partner. Butterfield's investment fund application asks for the "Approximate number of investors", the jurisdictions where more than 10% of the investor base is domiciled and the "Source of funds into the account on an ongoing basis." Cayman National Bank asks for identification and bank references for anyone holding more than 10%.

Open a Bank Account for Your Investment Fund

A bank account for investment funds is very achievable when the structure is explained before the bank asks. This is what we do for you.

  • Fund specialists: Our partner builds its accounts for funds, managers and complex structures.
  • Offshore structures welcome: SPVs in the BVI, Cayman, Jersey, Isle of Man, Luxembourg and UAE.
  • Banks slow to onboard: An account in about a week, not months of back and forth.
  • Capital calls in 50+ currencies: EUR, USD, GBP, AED and more in one account.
  • Fund and investor profile: Written the way reviewers want to read them.
  • Clear pricing, no surprises: One quote before we start.

New Managers Have No Track Record

Banks rarely publish rules for first-time managers, but a new manager has no audited accounts, no past funds and no history with the bank. The only published bar comes from a platform: AngelList suggests "$1M in soft commitments before launching a venture fund". A manager raising a first fund from friends, family and a few professional investors has to show the bank who they are and where the money comes from.

How the 2023 Bank Failures Hit Fund Banking

The 2023 bank failures hit the banks that served funds. The US Government Accountability Office found that Silicon Valley Bank's deposits "were mostly linked to businesses financed through venture capital". First Citizens took over the bridge bank that replaced it, Flagstar took over Signature Bank, and JPMorgan Chase took over First Republic. The FDIC later marketed $18.5 billion of Signature's loans that were subscription credit lines to private equity funds. Managers who relied on one specialist bank had to find another quickly.

Why Fund Bank Accounts Get Refused

Digital banks and EMIs limit funds in their terms. Airwallex lists "Investment and fund management or otherwise investing, administering or managing funds or money on behalf of any other persons" as a restricted activity that needs approval. Revolut Business lists "Special purpose vehicles/entities" and unregulated financial services as unsupported, and Wise restricts financial services "operating without a licence where one is required." Funds registered in the British Virgin Islands also face extra checks while the territory sits on the FATF grey list. Banks rarely explain a refusal, so the file has to be right the first time.

Banks That Open Investment Fund Accounts

Banking for investment funds runs mostly through offshore banks that work alongside administrators, US fund banks and specialist teams at larger banks. The table shows what the main options publish.

Digital banks are not an answer for most funds. Mercury serves only entities formed and registered in the United States, Revolut excludes SPVs and holding client money, and Airwallex needs approval before it will serve a fund manager. Choosing a bank for a fund comes down to where the fund is registered, who administers it and where its investors live.

Offshore Funds Bank Through Administrators

Cayman had 18,132 private funds and 13,013 mutual funds at the end of June 2026, served by 67 fund administrators. Many offshore banks meet funds through those administrators. CIBC Caribbean holds a Cayman bank and trust licence and a fund administrator licence, Barclays charges fund administrators a £250 yearly fee in the Channel Islands, and a Guernsey Private Investment Fund must have a designated administrator. A fund without an administrator the bank knows struggles to get in the door.

EU Funds Need a Local Depositary

The EU's updated fund rules, AIFMD II, had to be in national law by 16 April 2026, and they did not create a depositary passport. They only allow a depositary in another member state in narrow cases. Ireland said it "will not exercise this discretion", and Luxembourg funds that need a depositary must still appoint one in Luxembourg. A non-EU fund marketed into the EU by an EU manager must still appoint an outside firm to monitor its cash.

Investor Money Arrives From Everywhere

A fund with investors in 20 countries receives capital calls from 20 banking systems. Each incoming payment has to match an investor the administrator has checked, and banks ask in advance where the larger investors are based. A capital call that arrives from a country the bank did not expect can hold up the whole close.

Charges on Complex Files

Offshore banks price complexity into the account. In the Channel Islands, Butterfield charges £2,500 a year for a high-risk account and £4,500 where a politically exposed person is involved, and Lloyds may add up to £10,000 a year per entity for enhanced due diligence. Cayman National Bank charges KYD 50 (about US$60) a month to customers who fall behind on their KYC.

A Faster Way to Open a Bank Account for Investment Funds

There is a better alternative to the bank queue. Our partner, Interpolitan Money, is an electronic money institution authorised by the UK Financial Conduct Authority, with a Dubai International Financial Centre entity licensed by the DFSA. It serves private equity, venture capital, real estate and alternative credit funds for "Capital calls, investor distributions, SPVs and multi-jurisdiction structures", and names alternative investment managers, corporate service providers and fund administrators among its clients. It offers specialised anti-money laundering and KYC onboarding for funds, and says fund accounts open in 7 to 10 days rather than months.

Each fund, manager or SPV gets a multi-currency account holding 50+ currencies, with a unique IBAN or account number for each currency. Payments run over SWIFT, SEPA, SEPA Instant, Faster Payments, BACS and CHAPS, and batch payments pay every investor in one go. Currency can be exchanged at spot, fixed ahead with a forward or set with a limit order, which helps when capital calls arrive in one currency and investments are paid in another. It works with SPVs incorporated in the BVI, Cayman, Jersey, the Isle of Man, Luxembourg and the UAE, and every client gets a named relationship manager.

We prepare the file before the partner sees it: the fund's constitution and offering documents, the manager's and general partner's documents, the registration certificate, a structure chart, identity documents and an investor profile. Client money is held in segregated safeguarding accounts at major banks, separate from the partner's own funds. Be clear about what the account does: it receives, holds, converts and pays money. It is not a depositary or custodian, it does not offer loans or subscription credit lines, pay interest or hold securities, and it is not covered by the UK deposit guarantee scheme.

For a fund that needs to collect capital calls, pay for investments and send distributions in several currencies, our partner is faster and simpler. A bank still provides depositary services, custody and subscription lines where the fund needs them, and the two work side by side.

Which Funds Our Partner Accepts

Our partner lists alternative investments, debt, private equity, real estate and infrastructure among the funds it serves, alongside their managers and SPVs, and names fund administrators among its clients. We check the fit of every structure before anyone applies. What it will not take is a structure that hides who is behind it, money with no clear source, sanctioned links or payments to restricted countries and industries.

Opening a Bank Account for Investment Funds Online

Opening a bank account for investment funds online works in four steps. We build the file with you, the directors of the fund and general partner verify their identity and sign the application, the partner's compliance team reviews the structure and asks any questions through us, and the accounts go live with their IBANs and account numbers. No director has to visit a branch, and we prepare the manager's and fund's applications together.

Documents for an Investment Fund Bank Account

The documents for a bank account for investment funds cover the fund, the people who run it, its service providers and its investors. We gather them with you and write the parts reviewers care about most.

Fund Constitution and Offering Documents

Start with the certificate of incorporation or registration, and the partnership agreement, trust deed or articles. Add the "Fund Prospectus or Offering Memorandum", or a summary of terms for a private fund. Cayman National Bank also asks funds for their management agreements, and Butterfield asks for the fund's type and strategy and, for an existing fund, its latest audited accounts or regulatory return.

Manager, General Partner and Service Providers

Name the investment manager, general partner, administrator, custodian and auditor, with the country and regulator of each. Provide each company's register of directors or a certificate of incumbency, certified passports for directors and signatories, and a board resolution naming who can sign for the fund.

Registration and AML Officers

Show the fund's registration with its regulator. A Cayman private fund must register "within 21 days after the fund's acceptance of capital commitments and before accepting capital contributions for the purposes of investment", and every Cayman fund must appoint an AML compliance officer, a money laundering reporting officer and a deputy, each "a natural person, at managerial level". Jersey Private Funds, Guernsey Private Investment Funds and DIFC funds each have their own certificate or notification.

The Investor Profile

Give the expected number of investors, the countries where the larger investors are based and how their money will arrive. Explain who checks each investor, usually the administrator, and name any investor above 25% or with control rights. A clear investor profile answers the questions Butterfield and other fund banks put in their forms.

Tax Forms

Add the fund's FATCA and CRS classification with the right form, a W-9 for a US fund or a W-8 for a non-US one. Banks collect the fund's CRS and FATCA self-certification at account opening, so the classification matters for every account the fund opens.

Prepare Your Investment Fund Bank Account File

A fund account opens fastest when the fund, its providers and its investors fit on one page. We prepare it with you.

  • Structure chart signed: Fund, manager, general partner and feeders shown.
  • Investor profile written: Numbers, countries and how money will arrive.
  • Fund pack: Constitution, offering documents and registration.
  • Service providers named: Administrator, auditor and AML officers.
  • Tax forms ready: FATCA and CRS classification with the right form.

Investment Fund Bank Account Costs

The cost of a bank account for investment funds is small next to the fund's other costs, but it adds up across the fund, the manager and the general partner, and it grows with every investor country. The table sets typical ranges at banks against our partner's published pricing.

For a fund, the biggest cost is usually the time and the currency. A close delayed by two weeks while the bank reviews the investor list costs more than any account fee. A 2% margin on $10 million of capital calls and distributions costs $200,000. A bank remains the right home for a fund that needs a depositary or a subscription line, and it is fair to say so. All figures are planning ranges drawn from published tariffs, and we confirm your final price in writing before you apply.

How Long Investment Fund Bank Account Opening Takes

Regulators now register many funds in days, but banks give no set time for opening a bank account for investment funds. Cayman registers a mutual fund in about five business days, Jersey authorises a Jersey Private Fund in 24 hours through a designated service provider, and Guernsey registers a Private Investment Fund one business day after a complete application. With our partner, straightforward structures can open in 48 hours and complex ones in 7 to 10 days.

What Slows It Down

The usual delays are an administrator not yet appointed, AML officers not named, an investor profile with no countries or amounts, and a manager or director who cannot verify their identity in time. Cayman's regulator lists missing biographies for AML officers as a common cause of delay in its own reviews, and banks ask for the same people.

Bank Account for Investment Funds Before the First Close

Plan the account so it is live before investors send money. A Cayman private fund must register before accepting capital contributions, and it needs somewhere in its own name to receive them. Start the account while the fund is being registered, so the first capital call lands in an account that is ready.

How to Speed It Up

Appoint the administrator and AML officers first, build the structure chart and investor profile, and collect every director's documents in one round. Apply once, to a provider that takes your kind of fund, rather than to several banks at the same time.

What Happens After the Account Is Open

After the account opens, set up the capital call and distribution process with the administrator, add the authorised users and keep every investor payment matched to an investor record. Keep fund money in the fund's own account, apart from the manager's and general partner's money.

Keep the file current, because providers review funds regularly. Tell the provider about each new close, any investor above 25% and any change of manager, administrator or officer. Cayman private funds file audited accounts with the regulator within six months of their year end.

The rules around funds are also moving. The UK regulator proposed a new three-tier regime for fund managers in July 2026, with the new rules envisaged for 2028. The US anti-money laundering rule for investment advisers was pushed back to 1 January 2028, and the EU's new anti-money laundering regulation, with its beneficial ownership test, applies from 10 July 2027. Take legal advice on your own fund.

Why the Fund Comes Before the Account

A provider can only review a fund that is properly formed: the vehicle registered, the manager and general partner in place, the administrator appointed and the AML officers named. The table shows the main private fund regimes and what each costs to register.

Common Investment Fund Bank Account Mistakes

Most problems with a bank account for investment funds come from how the fund is presented, not from the fund itself. These are the mistakes we see most.

Opening the Account After Investors Commit

A fund that starts its bank application after the first close has investors waiting to send money and nowhere to send it. Start the account alongside the registration.

Running Fund Money Through the Manager's Account

Capital calls paid into the manager's account mix investor money with the manager's own and break the rules on where fund cash must sit.

Leaving the AML Officers Unnamed

Banks and regulators want named officers with biographies. A file without them stalls at the first review.

Missing Investor Countries

A capital call from a country the bank did not expect can hold up the whole close. List where the larger investors are based before you apply.

Applying to Digital Banks That Exclude Funds

A fund that applies to a digital bank listing SPVs or fund management as unsupported is refused by the eligibility rules.

Get Help With an Investment Fund Bank Account

Banking for investment funds is very manageable when the structure is planned with the bank in mind. Talk to us before the first close.

  • Structure checked first: We confirm our partner can bank your fund.
  • Fund, GP and manager: Accounts planned for every entity.
  • Refused before: We review the file and fix the gaps.
  • Honest advice: We tell you when a depositary or custodian bank should sit alongside.
  • One point of contact: From the first call to the first distribution.

Bottom Line

Banking for investment funds is harder than most managers expect. Banks need to see through the fund to its controllers and larger investors, offshore funds bank mostly through administrators, EU funds that need a depositary usually appoint a local one, and digital banks often exclude SPVs or restrict fund management.

For funds with international investors or an offshore home, the faster route is a regulated partner built for complex structures. With a complete file, including the offering documents, the registration, a structure chart and an investor profile, a bank account for investment funds takes about a week, with no branch visit.
