BVI offshore banking gives your BVI company an account to hold US dollars and other currencies, pay suppliers and receive client payments. The BVI has no exchange controls, uses the US dollar and exempts most companies from income tax, so a BVI offshore bank account keeps profits flexible and your structure clean.
The hard part is the bank. The BVI has more than 354,000 companies on its register and only six general banking licensees. Local banks ask for a trade licence, a three-year banker's reference or a large deposit. Since June 2025 the BVI has also been on the FATF grey list, so banks abroad review BVI companies more closely, and refusals are common.
This is where we come in. We build a complete bank file for your BVI company: corporate documents, KYC pack, ownership chart and source of funds. Our regulated banking partners then open a multi-currency account in days, remotely, with no large deposit. One team, one point of contact, and we get it done.
Our top-rated, licensed banking providers open multi-currency accounts for BVI companies with real business activity, fully online and without a trip to Tortola.

Why BVI Bank Accounts Are Hard for Non-Residents
BVI bank accounts are hard for non-residents because the islands are a company centre, not a banking centre. Very few banks operate there, they serve mostly local customers, and they apply strict checks to international companies. Banks abroad add their own risk rules for offshore structures, and the grey listing has made those rules tighter. For most owners, BVI offshore banking therefore means an account outside the islands.
Few Banks for a Very Large Register
The numbers explain most of the problem. The Financial Services Commission reported 354,015 business companies on the register at 30 June 2026, against six holders of a general banking licence with total deposits of about US$2.67 billion. The BVI Premier said in 2019 that the territory "is not a banking centre per se". Local banks cannot, and do not try to, bank the whole register.
Local Banks Want a Local Reason
BVI banking is built around residents, local businesses and a small number of international clients the banks know well. Republic Bank asks commercial customers for a business or trade licence, a certificate of good standing and a banker's reference from a relationship of at least three years. A new BVI company run from London, Dubai or Hong Kong usually has none of that.
Open a Business Bank Account in the BVI
A BVI bank account is very doable when the file is complete and placed with the right partner. This is what we do for you.
- Partners built for offshore: They onboard international companies as routine work.
- No trip to Tortola: Identity checks and signatures happen online.
- Multi-currency from day one: USD, EUR, GBP and more, with real IBANs.
- No large deposit: No US$25,000 opening balance to get started.
- KYC pack prepared: Registers, incumbency and source of funds, built for you.
- Avoid a rejection: One complete application, placed where it fits.
- No back-and-forth emails: One point of contact who gets it done.
The Grey List Adds Scrutiny
The FATF placed the BVI under increased monitoring on 13 June 2025, and it was still on the list after the June 2026 plenary. The FATF says the listing does not call for enhanced due diligence, but it asks banks to take it into account in their risk analysis. In practice, many banks abroad now ask BVI companies more questions about owners, activity and source of funds.
Strict Checks on Owners and Money
Every bank must identify the people who own and control the company, usually from 25%, and some from 10%. For a BVI company, that means the register of members, the register of directors, a certificate of incumbency and identity documents for each owner. Banks also want to see where the money comes from and what the company will do with it. A holding company with no clear source of funds is the file most banks refuse.
Nominees and Layered Ownership
Many BVI companies use nominee directors or sit under other companies. That is legal, but banks look through every layer to the real owners and controllers. A file that shows a nominee without naming the beneficial owner, or a chain of companies with no reason given, is sent back or refused. Explain each layer in one line and show who is at the top.
Shell Companies Are Refused Everywhere
Banks do not open accounts for companies with no real purpose. Swiss banks classify companies with no premises or staff of their own as domiciliary companies and apply extra forms and fees. Many e-money institutions list shell companies as a prohibited category. A BVI company that trades, invests or holds real assets can be banked. One that only exists on paper usually cannot.
A Refusal Follows You
Banks rarely explain a refusal, and they often ask whether you have been refused elsewhere. A string of declined applications makes the next bank more cautious. Apply once, with a complete file, to a provider that accepts your activity.

BVI Banks for Business Accounts
For BVI offshore banking on the islands themselves, a handful of banks offer business accounts, but most are built for local customers and charge heavily for international payments. The table shows what each bank publishes and who it realistically serves. Bank of Asia (BVI) is in liquidation, with joint liquidators appointed on 22 October 2025, so it is not an option.
Bank | Who it takes | Who it turns away | Monthly fee |
|---|---|---|---|
CIBC FirstCaribbean | International holding and trading companies, captives and funds | Files it cannot verify in full | $12 below a $5,000 average balance |
Republic Bank (BVI) | Businesses with a trade licence and a 3-year banker's reference | New companies without a local licence or history | $10 after a $500 opening balance |
FirstBank BVI | Local companies and residents | International files without a local link | $10 after a $500 opening deposit |
National Bank of the Virgin Islands | Local businesses and residents | Most international companies | $5, plus $10 below a $2,000 balance |
Banco Popular (BVI branches) | Local customers in Tortola and Virgin Gorda | International files without a local link | In line with other BVI banks |
VP Bank (BVI) | Private clients and intermediaries | Trading companies without private banking assets | Relationship based |
The table shows the gap. BVI bank accounts at these banks look cheap on the monthly fee, but the banks expect a local reason to bank, and most international BVI companies do not have one. The costs that matter are the wire fees, the balances and the time it takes to get through onboarding.
What It Takes to Open a Bank Account in the BVI
To open a bank account in the BVI, a company usually needs a local reason and a strong paper trail. Republic Bank's checklist includes a trade licence, a certificate of good standing, a three-year banker's reference, three years of financial statements or projections for a new entity, a corporate family tree and proof of source of funds. Politically exposed persons must attend the Road Town branch. That is a heavy file for a new company, and anyone planning to open a business bank account in the BVI should expect the same kind of list at every local bank.
High Fees on Every International Payment
BVI banks charge a lot to move money abroad. CIBC FirstCaribbean charges $55 to $130 for an outgoing international wire online and $75 to $145 in branch, depending on the amount. If you want the sender to pay correspondent fees, it adds $24 upfront. Republic Bank charges a $25 SWIFT fee plus $15 in bank charges online, or $35 in branch. Incoming wires cost $10 to $15 each.
Large Minimum Balances
The published local fees assume a balance. CIBC FirstCaribbean charges its monthly fee below a $5,000 average balance, and the National Bank adds $10 a month below $2,000. For non-resident companies, introducers quote opening balances of US$25,000 to US$50,000 at CIBC FirstCaribbean and around US$100,000 at VP Bank. That money sits idle.
Slow, Paper-Heavy Onboarding
Local onboarding is manual. Republic Bank's digital onboarding covers personal accounts only, so business accounts go through a paper file. Certified copies, apostilles and couriered originals add days, and every follow-up question adds more. Introducers quote two to five weeks for BVI banks, once the file is complete.
Offshore Banking in the BVI or Abroad
Most BVI offshore banking happens abroad, not in the BVI. Offshore banking in the BVI itself serves a small part of the market. The law does not require a BVI company to bank in the BVI, and international banks in Switzerland, Singapore, Hong Kong and Cyprus have long served BVI structures. They are also slower and more expensive than most founders expect.
Switzerland
Swiss banks accept BVI companies, but at a price. Under the Swiss bankers' due diligence code, a company with no premises or staff of its own is a domiciliary company and must declare its beneficial owner on a special form. Zürcher Kantonalbank charges CHF 50 a month per account for domiciliary companies and companies domiciled abroad. Private banks such as Julius Baer are reported to expect around CHF 1 million in assets.
Singapore
Singapore banks take foreign companies through a relationship manager. DBS charges S$40 a month on its corporate multi-currency account, waived at an average balance of S$10,000. The Monetary Authority of Singapore found in 2026 that private banking accounts took a median of five to six weeks to open, and set a target of one month by the end of 2026.
Hong Kong
Hong Kong banks ask for the certificate of incorporation, certificate of incumbency, certificate of good standing and details of the ownership and control structure. Hong Kong's government reported in 2018 that 50% to 60% of business accounts opened within two weeks. The main reason for refusal was missing information for due diligence.
Cyprus
Cyprus banks tightened their rules on shell companies in 2018. They must avoid companies with no physical presence that are registered where audited accounts are not required and that are tax resident in listed jurisdictions. Law firms quote three to four weeks for a Cyprus account for a foreign company.

A Faster and Cheaper Way to Open a BVI Business Account
There is a better alternative for BVI offshore banking than local and private banks. Our regulated banking partners are licensed e-money institutions built for international companies. They open multi-currency accounts in days, fully online, with no branch visit, no local director and no large deposit.
We prepare the file before the partner sees it: registers, certificate of incumbency, good standing, ownership chart, identity documents and a clear source of funds. Because the file answers the partner's questions upfront, most reviews finish in days. BVI companies with real activity, such as trading, services or holding real investments, are the files our partners accept.
Client money is protected differently from a bank deposit. E-money institutions keep client funds separate from their own money, in safeguarding accounts at major banks, and they cannot lend it out. That is different from the BVI deposit insurance scheme, which covers bank deposits up to US$100,000 per depositor per bank.
Feature | BVI and private banks | Our partners |
|---|---|---|
Time to open | 2 to 6 weeks, longer at private banks | Days |
Who they accept | Local customers and known international clients | International companies with real activity |
Branch visit | Often required | Not required |
Minimum balance | $2,000 locally, US$25,000 to CHF 1 million abroad | None, or up to three months of plan fees |
Monthly cost | $5 to CHF 50 plus balance conditions | €30 to €100 on a published plan |
Currencies | Mostly USD | USD, EUR, GBP and many more |
International payments | $40 to $145 per wire | €15 or less per SWIFT on published plans |
Currency conversion | Bank rate with an unpublished margin | Low margin, shown before you confirm |
Our partners are not a like-for-like copy of a private bank. They do not lend, pay interest or hold securities. For a BVI company that needs to receive and send payments in several currencies, they do the job faster and at lower cost.
Which BVI Companies Our Partners Accept
Our partners accept BVI companies that do something real: trading goods, selling services, running an online business or holding real investments with a clear source of funds. They also accept owners and directors from most countries, including those who live far from the Caribbean. Rather than trying to open a business bank account in the BVI, these companies get multi-currency accounts with local details for UK and EU payments.
Some activities are outside their risk appetite whatever the jurisdiction. These usually include gambling, adult content, cannabis, weapons, crypto exchange and shell companies with no purpose. For a high-risk activity, we use a different partner built for that sector. We check the fit before you apply, so you do not collect a refusal.
Opening a Business Bank Account for a BVI Company Online
A BVI offshore bank account with our partners takes about half an hour of your time to open. You can open a BVI bank account for your company without leaving your desk. You complete a short application, verify your identity with a passport and a live selfie, and sign electronically. We upload the company documents, answer the partner's questions and tell you when the account is live.

Documents Needed for a BVI Bank Account
The documents for a BVI offshore bank account come from three places: the company, its owners and its business. Most come from your registered agent, and we collect the rest with you.
Documents for the Company
The company provides its certificate of incorporation, memorandum and articles of association, register of directors and register of members. Banks also want a recent certificate of incumbency, issued by the registered agent, and a certificate of good standing from the Registry, which costs $100. Since 2 January 2025, BVI companies file their register of members with the Registrar, so the file must match what is on record.
Documents for Each Owner and Director
Each director, each owner above the bank's threshold and each signatory provides a passport and a proof of address from the last three months. Where a company owns shares in the BVI company, the bank looks through it to the people at the top, so the ownership chart must show every layer.
Documents About the Business
The bank wants to know what the company does and why it is in the BVI. That means a business description, the countries you trade with, expected monthly payments in and out, and your main clients or suppliers. Contracts, invoices and a website help. You also explain the source of funds, with proof such as sale documents, dividends or salary records.
Certification and Apostille
BVI documents sent to a bank abroad usually need certification and often an apostille. Copies of personal documents need certification by a lawyer, notary or accountant. With our partners, identity checks happen online, which removes most of the personal certification.

- Registers and incumbency: Collected from your registered agent for you.
- Ownership chart: Every layer shown, down to the people at the top.
- Source of funds written: In the format reviewers expect.

- Clear pricing, no surprises: One quote before we start.
BVI Business Bank Account Costs
A BVI business bank account at a local or private bank looks cheap on the monthly fee and costs a lot everywhere else. Wire fees, balance conditions and currency margins decide the real price. The table sets typical ranges at BVI and offshore banks against our partners' published plans.
Charge | Typical range at a BVI or offshore bank | With our partners |
|---|---|---|
Account opening | $500 opening deposit locally, US$25,000 to US$100,000 quoted for non-resident companies | Free to €500, higher for complex structures |
Monthly fee | $5 to $12 locally, CHF 50 at some Swiss banks | €30 to €100 on a published plan |
Low-balance charge | $10 to $12 a month below $2,000 to $5,000 | None |
Minimum relationship | US$25,000 to CHF 1 million at offshore and private banks | None, or up to three months of plan fees |
Additional currency accounts | Mostly USD, other currencies at extra cost | Free |
International payments out | $40 to $145 each | €15 or less on published plans |
International payments in | $10 to $15 each | Free to €5 each |
Sender pays all charges | $24 added upfront at some banks | Available, at extra cost |
Currency conversion | Bank rate with an unpublished margin | Low margin, shown before you confirm |
Transfers between your own accounts | Free to a few dollars | Free |
Cash deposits | 0.25% to 0.75% of the amount | Not offered, accounts are electronic |
Early account closure | $15 to $50 in the first year | One month's plan fee, more within six months |
In BVI offshore banking, the monthly fee is the smallest number in the table. A company that sends 10 international wires a month from a BVI bank pays $550 to $1,450 a month in wire fees alone, before any currency margin. A private bank that expects CHF 1 million on deposit ties up money the business could use.
A BVI bank can be cheaper for a local company that pays local suppliers in US dollars and keeps a steady balance. For an international BVI company, our partners cost less overall and open far faster. All figures are planning ranges, and we confirm the final price in writing before you apply.

How Long BVI Bank Account Opening Takes
In BVI offshore banking, the timeline depends on who you apply to. BVI bank account opening takes two to six weeks at a BVI bank once the file is complete, and often longer at a private bank abroad. With our partners, the account usually opens in days once we have your documents.
Stage | BVI or offshore bank | Our partners |
|---|---|---|
Preparing the file | 1 to 3 weeks for references, certified copies and apostilles | A few days, built with us |
Review and follow-up questions | 2 to 6 weeks, longer at private banks | A few days |
Meeting or branch visit | Often required | Not required |
Account open and ready | 3 to 8 weeks or more | Days after the file is complete |
What Slows It Down
The usual delays are an outdated certificate of incumbency, a register that does not match the Registry, an unclear ownership chain and a vague source of funds. Branch appointments and couriered originals add weeks at traditional banks.
How to Speed It Up
Ask your registered agent for fresh certificates at the start, keep the ownership chart simple and write down where the money comes from with proof. Answer questions the same day. With a complete file, a partner review takes days.

What Happens After the Account Is Open
After the account opens, fund it, add your users and share the account details with clients. Some plans ask for a first deposit within 30 days, and we confirm the amount before you sign.
Good BVI offshore banking depends on a company in good standing, because banks check it at every review. BVI companies pay an annual government fee of $550 if authorised to issue up to 50,000 shares, due by 31 May or 30 November depending on when the company was formed. Paying late adds 10%, or 50% after two months. Companies also file an annual financial return with their registered agent within nine months of the year end, keep beneficial ownership filings current and report on economic substance each year.
Your account is also reported under the Common Reporting Standard, which the BVI adopted early, so tax authorities in the owners' countries receive the information. Tell the partner about changes in owners, directors or activity, and keep your documents current for periodic reviews.

Why the Company Comes Before the Account
A bank can only verify a BVI company once it exists on the register, with a company number, a certificate of incorporation and registers on file. Every BVI company is formed through a licensed registered agent, and BVI offshore banking starts from that record. If you do not have the company yet, get BVI banking advice before you form it: we plan the structure so it can be banked, then prepare the bank file while the company is formed.

Common BVI Offshore Banking Mistakes
Most BVI offshore banking problems start with the structure or the file, not the bank. These are the mistakes we see most.
Forming the Company Before Planning the Banking
Many founders form a BVI company first and look for a bank later. By then the structure may be one that no bank wants, such as a company with no activity or layered owners with no clear reason. Plan how the company will bank before you form it.
Applying to Several Banks at Once
Parallel applications with a thin file lead to parallel refusals, and banks ask whether you have been refused elsewhere. One complete application to the right provider works better.
Sending Old Certificates
Banks want a certificate of incumbency and good standing issued recently. Old certificates, or registers that do not match the Registry filing, send the file back.
Leaving the Source of Funds Vague
"Investment" or "business income" is not enough. Reviewers want to know where the money came from and see proof. This is the most common reason BVI files stall.
Hiding the Real Owner Behind Nominees
A nominee director or shareholder does not hide the beneficial owner from a bank. Banks and partners will identify the real owner anyway, and a file that tries to avoid it is refused. Disclose the owner from the start.
Letting the Company Fall Behind on Fees and Filings
A late annual fee or a missed filing costs the company its good standing. Banks check this at opening and at every review, and a struck-off company cannot hold an account.
Get BVI Banking Advice
BVI banking advice before you apply saves weeks, because the structure and the file decide the outcome. Talk to us first.
- Structure checked first: We confirm a partner can bank your company.
- Hard cases handled: Holding companies, layered owners and owners abroad.
- Refused before: We review the file and fix the gaps.
- Honest advice: We tell you when a structure will not bank.
- One point of contact: From the first call to the first payment.
Bottom Line
BVI offshore banking is harder than forming the company. The BVI has hundreds of thousands of companies and very few banks, the local banks want a local reason, and banks abroad have tightened checks since the grey listing. Private banks and offshore banks expect large balances and charge heavily for wires. Offshore banking in the BVI itself is built for local customers.
For a BVI company with real activity, the faster way to open a BVI bank account is a regulated partner built for international companies. BVI bank accounts with our partners need no large deposit and no branch visit. With a complete file, a multi-currency account opens in days, remotely, with no large deposit.
