A business bank account in Jersey gives your company a sterling account in a Crown Dependency with its own regulator, access to UK payment systems and SEPA, and a banking address that clients and auditors recognise. Jersey's 19 banks held £193.1 billion of deposits at the end of March 2026.
The hard part is qualifying. NatWest International, HSBC and Lloyds build their business accounts for companies that trade on the island, with owners and directors who live there. A company owned from abroad is sent to intermediary banks that expect a relationship, charge £25 or more for each international payment and take weeks to review a file. Refusals are common and rarely explained.
There is a simpler route. Our licensed banking partners open multi-currency accounts for Jersey companies in days, fully remotely, with no minimum balance and far lower payment and currency costs. We build the file, place it with the partner most likely to approve it and answer the follow-up questions, so you deal with one team.
Our top-rated, licensed banking partners open accounts for Jersey companies owned from anywhere, with identity checked online and no branch visit.

Why Jersey Business Bank Accounts Are Hard to Open
Jersey business bank accounts are hard to open because the island's banks write residence and local-activity rules into their products. The rules sit in the account terms, so a sound company with owners abroad is turned away as quickly as a weak one. Before you open a business bank account in Jersey, it helps to know which rule you fail and why.
The Residence Rule at the Island Banks
NatWest International's online business account is for companies registered or tax resident in Jersey, with every owner and director living in the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man or Gibraltar. It also asks for a single layer of ownership, no nominee shareholders and cash takings below 20% of turnover. HSBC wants the main business activity in Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man, turnover under £10 million, and decision-makers who live locally with a local mobile number. Lloyds' Island Business Banking Account is for companies registered and operating in the islands. A company formed in Jersey but run from London, Dubai or Singapore fails all three tests on day one. See how to open a Jersey bank account as a non-resident for the personal side.
A Business Bank Account for Non-UK Residents
Many founders look at Jersey for a business bank account for non-UK residents: a sterling account outside the UK, in a well-regulated place. The idea is sound, but the island banks do not work that way. Their rule is about living on the island, not about living outside the UK, so a founder in Spain or the UAE is treated the same as one in Manchester. A business bank account for non-UK residents in Jersey almost always comes from an intermediary bank or from our partners, not from the high street.
Open a Business Bank Account in Jersey
A business bank account in Jersey is very doable with the right partner and a complete file. This is what we handle for you.
- Owners anywhere: Directors and shareholders can live outside the islands.
- Island banks want residents: Our partners do not, and they open in days.
- No minimum balance: No relationship deposit before the account opens.
- Multi-currency from day one: GBP, EUR, USD and more, with real IBANs.
- Avoid a rejection: We fix gaps in the file before anything is submitted.
- KYC pack prepared: We tell you what we need and build the file.
- No back-and-forth emails: One contact runs the application to the end.
Strict Checks on Owners and Money
Jersey banks apply the JFSC's AML Handbook in full, and the island was rated among the strongest performers in MONEYVAL's 2024 report, compliant or largely compliant on 39 of 40 FATF Recommendations. In practice that means every owner above the threshold is traced to a real person, source of wealth is evidenced, and the money the company expects to receive is explained with contracts or invoices. A corporate owner in another country adds a full second file for the parent. Our guide to KYC for business account opening lists what each check covers.
High-Risk Countries and Sectors
Crypto, gambling, adult content, arms, money services and companies with owners or customers in higher-risk countries are declined by most island banks without a detailed review. The bank does not have to give a reason. A company in one of these sectors needs a provider that already accepts its profile, not a better cover letter.
A Refusal Follows You
Application forms ask whether the company or its owners have been refused an account before. A refusal at one Jersey bank is visible to the next through that question, and a second refusal makes the third harder. Refusals are common, and the letters rarely say why, which is the worst part for a founder trying to fix the file.
What to Do After a Refusal
Do not reapply straight away with the same file. Find out which rule you failed: residence, ownership structure, sector or missing documents. Fix what can be fixed, then apply once to a provider whose rules you meet. Our guide to a business account rejected covers the common reasons in detail.
Jersey Banks for Business Accounts
Jersey has 19 registered banks, but only a handful offer business accounts, and each serves a narrow group. The local high street banks take island businesses, and the intermediary banks take structures introduced by trust companies and fund administrators.
Bank | Who it takes | Who it turns away | Monthly fee |
|---|---|---|---|
NatWest International | Companies registered or tax resident in Jersey, with owners and directors living in the islands or Gibraltar | Owners abroad, nominee shareholders and more than one layer of ownership | £12.50 for the Business Current Account |
HSBC | Businesses whose main activity is in Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man, with turnover under £10 million | Decision-makers who do not live locally | £8 to £10 |
Lloyds Bank | Companies registered and operating in the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man, plus trust and fund businesses through a specialist team | Companies with no operation on the islands | £8.50 to £20 |
Barclays | Local small and larger businesses on its island tariffs | Decided case by case, with no published route for owners abroad | Relationship based |
Butterfield | Trust companies, fund administrators, law firms and other intermediaries | Trading companies applying without an intermediary | Relationship based, with a maintenance fee at the bank's discretion |
Standard Bank | Trust and corporate service providers regulated in the Crown Dependencies | Companies applying directly | Relationship based |
The monthly fees at the high street banks look low, and for a local company they are. The catch is that a company owned from abroad cannot open those accounts. It ends up at an intermediary bank, where the fee is set by relationship and every payment is charged. More detail on each bank is in our guide to NatWest International, Butterfield and HSBC business accounts in Jersey.
High Fees on Every International Payment
HSBC charges £17 for an international payment made online and £20 to £30 by phone or in a branch. Butterfield charges £25 or £37 online for a SWIFT payment, depending on who pays the charges, and £80 to £92 for a manual instruction. CHAPS runs at £17 to £30. A company that pays suppliers in several countries pays these fees on every payment, every month.
Wide Currency Margins
The island banks do not publish their FX margins. They are built into the rate you are quoted and often land between 1% and 3% over the interbank rate. HSBC also charges 2.75% on card spending in other currencies. About 70% of Jersey's bank deposits are in foreign currency, so for most companies abroad this is the largest cost line, not the monthly fee.
Relationships Before Accounts
The banks that take structures owned from abroad expect a relationship first. Santander International's corporate enquiry form sorts new clients by initial deposit, from under £75,000 to over £500,000, and Butterfield charges a maintenance fee at its discretion. Money parked to keep a relationship earns little and cannot be used in the business.
Slow, Paper-Heavy Onboarding
HSBC quotes 6 to 8 weeks for a new business account, with a relationship manager in touch within 5 working days of the enquiry. Intermediary banks review through the trust company, often with certified paper copies. Each follow-up question adds days, and the company cannot pay or be paid while it waits.

A Faster and Cheaper Way to Open a Jersey Business Account
There is a better alternative to the island banks, and most companies owned from abroad now use it to open a Jersey business account. Our banking partners are licensed electronic money institutions that onboard Jersey companies as normal business. They open accounts in days, fully remotely, with no residence rule, no minimum balance and no branch visit.
The account works like a business bank account for everyday use: GBP, EUR and USD balances in one place, real IBANs, SEPA and SWIFT payments, cards and online banking. International payments and currency conversion cost a fraction of the island bank rates, which matters most when the owners and the customers are abroad. It suits trading companies, holding companies and SPVs alike, as covered in how to open a bank account for a Jersey SPV.
Our partners must safeguard client money, keeping it apart from their own funds. Deposit compensation does not apply to e-money, but for a company that gap is smaller than it looks: Jersey's depositor compensation scheme covers individuals, not companies or trusts, so a company's balance at a Jersey bank has no scheme cover either. The differences are set out in business bank account vs EMI account.
Feature | Jersey banks | Our partners |
|---|---|---|
Who they accept | Island businesses with local owners, or structures through an intermediary | Jersey companies with owners and directors anywhere |
Time to open | 6 to 8 weeks at HSBC, often longer through an intermediary | About 4 days from a complete file |
Minimum balance | None for local businesses, a relationship for structures owned from abroad | None |
Monthly cost | £8 to £20 for local businesses, relationship based otherwise | About €10 to €100 on a published plan |
Currencies | Sterling, with a separate account for each currency | Several currencies in one account, with real IBANs |
International payments | £17 to £37 online, up to £92 by manual instruction | About €5 to €25 per payment |
Foreign exchange | Often 1% to 3%, built into the rate | About 0.25% to 1.0% over the interbank rate |
The monthly fee is the one line where a local account can win, and a company owned from abroad usually cannot open that account. On everything else, the partner route is faster and cheaper.

Documents Needed for a Jersey Business Bank Account
If you are working out how to open a business bank account in Jersey, start with the file. Every provider asks for the same core file. A complete file is the single biggest factor in how fast the account opens, whether you use an island bank or our partners.
For the Company
The certificate of incorporation, the memorandum and articles, the registers of members and directors, and an ownership chart that traces every corporate owner to real people. Add the JFSC consent to issue shares, confirmation of the registered office and a board resolution naming who may operate the account. A company that is only a few days old is fine; our partners do not ask for trading history. If the company is not formed yet, read how to register a private company in Jersey.
For Each Director, Owner and Signatory
A passport, proof of address from the last three months, and a short note on source of wealth, such as salary, a business sale or investments. Each person also completes a CRS tax self-certification, because Jersey reports accounts held by residents of other countries to their tax authorities.
For the Business
A short description of what the company does, where its customers and suppliers are, the currencies it uses, and the volumes it expects in the first year. Contracts, invoices or a website make this credible. A holding company explains what it owns and where dividends come from, as covered in banking for holding companies.
Certification and Translation
Island banks usually want certified copies signed by a lawyer, notary or accountant, and certified translations of documents in other languages. Our partners check identity online, which removes most of the certification work. The full list is in our guide to documents and requirements to open a Jersey bank account.
Prepare Your Jersey Bank Account File
A clean file is what gets a business bank account in Jersey opened in days. This is how we prepare it with you.
- One checklist: Exactly what each owner and director needs to send.
- Ownership traced for you: Corporate owners mapped to the real people behind them.
- Source of wealth written up: Clear, short and backed by documents.
- Right provider first time: We match your profile before anything is submitted.
- No certified paper copies: Identity checked online with our partners.
- Questions answered fast: We reply to follow-ups the same day.
Jersey Business Bank Account Costs
A local island account costs £8 to £20 a month, but a company owned from abroad usually cannot open one. With our partners, a business bank account in Jersey costs about €10 to €100 a month on a published plan. For a company run from abroad, the real cost of banking sits in international payments, currency conversion and the relationship a bank expects.
Charge | Typical range at a Jersey bank | With our partners |
|---|---|---|
Account opening | Free for local businesses, relationship based for structures owned from abroad | Free on most plans |
Monthly account fee | £8 to £20 for local businesses, relationship based otherwise | About €10 to €100 on a published plan |
Minimum balance or relationship | None for local businesses; deposit bands from under £75,000 to over £500,000 at corporate banks | None |
Maintenance fee | At the bank's discretion at some intermediary banks | None beyond the plan |
Additional currency accounts | A separate account for each currency | Included in one multi-currency account |
SEPA payments out | About 24p online at some banks | About €0.20 to €4 per payment |
International payments out, online | £17 to £37 | About €5 to €25 per payment |
International payments out, manual | £20 to £92 | Online by default |
FX margin | Often 1% to 3%, built into the rate | About 0.25% to 1.0% over the interbank rate |
Cash paid in | 1.50% of the amount at some banks | Not offered, accounts are electronic |
Periodic compliance review | Can take weeks and trigger new document requests | Included |
Where the Money Goes
The currency line matters most. A company that converts £500,000 a year at a 2% margin pays £10,000 for it. At 0.5%, the same conversions cost £2,500. That £7,500 gap is worth more than 30 years of a £20 monthly fee, and it grows with every SWIFT payment sent at £25 to £37 each. Our guide to business bank account fees shows how to compare plans line by line, and the cost of Jersey company formation covers the company's own first-year budget.
Where a Jersey Bank Is Cheaper
A company that trades only on the island, with local owners, pays £8 to £12.50 a month at a high street bank and 24p for a SEPA payment. That is cheaper than any partner plan, and it is the right account for that business. Many companies keep both: a partner account for currencies and payments abroad, and a local account once they qualify.
These figures are planning ranges drawn from published price lists in 2026. Your final price is confirmed in writing before you open an account.

How Long a Jersey Business Bank Account Takes
With our partners, a Jersey business account usually opens in about 4 days from a complete file. At an island bank, the same company waits weeks, if it qualifies at all.
Stage | Jersey bank | Our partners |
|---|---|---|
Preparing the file | 1 to 2 weeks to collect certified copies and references | 1 to 3 days with our checklist |
Review and follow-up questions | Several weeks; HSBC quotes 6 to 8 weeks overall | 1 to 3 days, answered by us |
Account open and ready | After the review, with cards and access set up | About 4 days from a complete file, online access at once |
What Slows Down Opening a Business Bank Account in Jersey
Missing source of wealth, owners who cannot be traced through a corporate chain, documents in different names or addresses, and a business description that does not match the expected payments. Each one adds a round of questions, and an island bank may simply close the file.
How to Speed It Up
Send a complete file once, answer questions within a day, and apply to a provider whose rules you already meet. For typical timings across providers, read how long a business bank account takes to open.

What Happens After the Account Is Open
Opening a business bank account in Jersey is the start of the relationship, not the end of the checks. Providers review every business customer on a cycle, and the company has its own duties in Jersey.
Periodic Reviews
Expect a review every one to three years, and sooner if payments change sharply. The provider asks for updated identity documents, recent accounts and an explanation of any new countries or activities. Answer quickly, because an unanswered review can lead to restrictions.
Changes You Must Report
Tell the provider about new directors, owners or signatories, a new registered office, or a change in what the company does. Beneficial ownership changes must also be notified to the JFSC within 21 days, with fines of up to £10,000 for failures.
Tax Reporting
The company files its Jersey tax return by 30 November of the following year, and the account is reported under CRS to the owners' home tax authorities where they live abroad. Keep the company's bookkeeping in line with its bank statements from the first month.
Jersey Company Formation With a Bank Account
The company comes before the account. A provider can only open an account for a company that exists, with a certificate, a constitution and a registered office. Forming the company with the account in mind saves weeks: the ownership chart, the KYC pack and the business description are built once and used for both. That is why we run Jersey company formation with a bank account as one process: the company is formed in about a week from €1,499, and the account application goes in with the same file. Read our guide to company formation in Jersey, or how to set up a Jersey company with a bank account.

Common Jersey Business Bank Account Mistakes
Most refusals and delays in opening a business bank account in Jersey come from a handful of avoidable mistakes.
Applying to the Island Banks First From Abroad
A company with owners abroad fails the residence rule at NatWest International, HSBC and Lloyds before the business is reviewed. Each refusal then has to be declared on the next form. Start with a provider whose rules you meet. Our guide to a business bank account for non-residents compares the options elsewhere.
Nominee Shareholders and Layered Ownership
Nominee shareholders and several layers of companies are declined outright by some banks and slow every other provider down. Show the real owners clearly, and keep the chain as short as the structure allows. Our guide to bank accounts for Jersey holding companies covers group structures.
Documents That Do Not Match
A passport in one spelling, a utility bill in another and a register with a third is a common cause of delay. Check names, dates and addresses across every document before the file goes in.
Ignoring Where the Company Is Managed
A Jersey company whose board decides everything in another country can be taxed there, and the bank will ask about it on the CRS form. Settle where the company is managed before you apply, as explained in setting up a business in Jersey as a non-resident.
Choosing on the Monthly Fee Alone
The monthly fee is the smallest cost for most companies abroad. Compare the FX margin and the cost of international payments first, then the fee.
Talk to Us About Your Jersey Business Account
Not sure which route fits your company? Tell us who owns it and what it does, and we choose the right partner to open a Jersey business account for you.
- Corporate owners: Parent companies traced and documented for you.
- Owners in several countries: One file that works for every director.
- Higher-risk sectors: We tell you honestly which providers will accept you.
- After a refusal: We find out why and fix the file before the next application.
- Company and account together: We form the company and open the account in one process.
Bottom Line
The island banks build their business accounts for local companies with local owners, so a company owned from abroad is either refused or sent to an intermediary bank with high payment fees, wide currency margins and a relationship to maintain. The better route is to open a Jersey business account with a licensed partner built for companies owned from abroad: an account in about 4 days, fully remote, with several currencies and far lower payment and currency costs. That is how to open a business bank account in Jersey without a refusal: form the company first, build a complete file and apply once to a provider that fits.
