A bank account for a Guernsey trust is where the trust fund lives day to day: income comes in, investments are paid for, and distributions go out to beneficiaries. Guernsey trusts can last for an unlimited time, the trust deed is not filed with any public body, and a trust with no Guernsey-resident beneficiaries is taxed in Guernsey only on local income.
The hard part is the bank. The account sits in the trustees' names, and the bank must identify the settlor, trustees, protector and beneficiaries first. Most Guernsey banks take trusts only through licensed trust companies, then add risk charges and weeks of review, and refusals are common when a party is missing.
You do not need to work through any of that alone. We work with licensed Guernsey trust and corporate services providers and prepare the whole file: trust documents, parties, source of wealth and KYC. Our regulated banking partners then open a multi-currency account in days. One team handles it, and we get it done.
Our top-rated, licensed banking providers work with trusts, holding structures and family wealth, and open multi-currency accounts online in days.

Why a Guernsey Trust Bank Account Is Hard to Open
A Guernsey trust bank account is hard to open because a trust is not a company. It has no certificate, no register and no directors, only a deed and the people named in it. The bank has to understand who put the money in, who controls it and who can benefit, often across several countries, and then decide whether it wants that relationship at all.
The Account Belongs to the Trustees
A trust is created when property is transferred to a trustee, and the trustee, not the trust, holds legal title. So the bank account sits in the trustees' names, as trustees of the named trust. Where the trustee is a company, the bank onboards that company as well as the trust. NatWest International keeps separate mandates for joint corporate trustees, while a sole corporate trustee signs its company mandate.
Every Party Has to Be Identified
Under Guernsey's anti-money laundering law, the beneficial owners of a trust include every beneficiary who is a natural person, every trustee, settlor, protector or enforcer who is a natural person, and anyone else with ultimate control. The bank has to identify each of them and understand how the structure works. A discretionary trust with a wide class of beneficiaries, a protector in another country and a settlor who has since moved makes that a long list.
Open a Business Bank Account in Guernsey for Your Trust
A bank account for a Guernsey trust is very doable when every party is explained before the bank asks. This is what we do for you.
- Licensed trustees: We work with regulated Guernsey trust companies.
- Every party mapped: Settlor, trustees, protector and beneficiaries in one chart.
- Source of wealth written: The settlor's story, evidenced for the reviewer.
- Banks slow to onboard: An account in days, not six to eight weeks.
- Distributions in any currency: GBP, EUR, USD and more in one account.
- Clear pricing, no surprises: One quote before we start.
The Settlor's Source of Wealth Carries the File
Guernsey's rules require enhanced checks for personal asset holding vehicles, non-resident customers and private banking, and most family trusts fall into at least one of those. Enhanced checks mean senior management sign-off and evidence of the source of funds and the source of wealth. For a trust, that means the settlor: how the money was made, when, and how it reached the trust. A sale agreement, dividend history or an estate grant each help. A single line saying "family wealth" does not.
Banks Take Trusts Through Licensed Trustees
In Guernsey, trusts are generally run by professional trustees licensed by the Guernsey Financial Services Commission. A Guernsey company acting as trustee by way of business needs a full fiduciary licence, and an individual paid to act as trustee or protector needs a personal licence. Since 3 September 2025, private trust companies also need a full licence, or a limited permission that requires administration by a licensed fiduciary. The banks follow the same line: their trust business comes through trust companies, fiduciaries and administrators, and a family trust with no licensed trustee finds it hard to open a business bank account in Guernsey at all.
Why Guernsey Trust Bank Accounts Get Rejected
Most refusals come from gaps in the file. A beneficiary or protector is not identified. The settlor's source of wealth is thin. A politically exposed person sits somewhere in the structure. An underlying company is shown without its own documents. Or the trustees apply to a bank that does not take trust business at all. Guernsey banks rarely explain a refusal, and knowing why Guernsey trust bank accounts get rejected before you apply is the best way to avoid a second one.

Best Banks for Guernsey Trusts
The best banks for Guernsey trusts are the ones built around trust companies and fiduciaries. Guernsey had 21 licensed banks at 30 June 2026, and a large share of their business supports the island's fiduciary, fund and insurance sectors. Every one of them runs strict checks on trusts and prices the complexity. The table shows what the main ones publish.
Bank | Who it takes | Who it turns away | Monthly fee |
|---|---|---|---|
Butterfield | Trust companies, fund administrators, asset managers and private clients | Files it rates high risk, unless they pay a yearly risk charge | Set at the bank's discretion |
Barclays (Guernsey) | Fiduciaries through its fiduciary proposition, plus corporates | High-risk and PEP files, unless they pay yearly charges | £17.50 to £40 a quarter, plus £500 a year per fiduciary |
Investec (Channel Islands) | Trust companies, fund companies and family offices | Clients outside its private client, intermediary and island segments | Relationship based |
Rothschild & Co Bank International | International private clients and their trusts and structures | Trading companies looking for everyday business banking | Relationship based |
NatWest International | Trust structures introduced on intermediary forms, including corporate trustees | Trust accounts opened without an intermediary | £12.50 per account |
Lloyds (Guernsey) | Financial intermediaries on Business Extra | Trustees who are not intermediaries or large trading firms | £20 on Business Extra |
A new bank, Bank Aston, was licensed in June 2025 as Guernsey's first locally licensed bank in almost 30 years, aimed at offshore trustees, funds and family offices. It had not announced that accounts were open when we checked in September 2026. Choosing among the best banks for Guernsey trusts comes down to whether the trust needs custody, lending and investment services, or simply a reliable way to receive and pay money across borders.
Yearly Risk and PEP Charges
Guernsey banks charge more for files they rate as higher risk, and trusts with international parties often are. Butterfield charges £2,500 a year for a high-risk account and £4,500 where a politically exposed person is involved. Barclays charges from £2,500 a year for high risk and from £5,000 where a PEP is involved. Lloyds may charge up to £10,000 a year per legal entity where enhanced due diligence is needed.
High Fees on International Payments
Trusts pay beneficiaries and advisers in other countries, and every payment costs. Butterfield charges £25 for an online SWIFT payment and £80 for a manual one. Barclays charges £20 online and £45 manual. NatWest International charges £15 electronic and £25 manual, and Lloyds charges 25p per £100, between £13 and £40. Inward currency payments cost £6 to £7.
Slow, Paper-Heavy Onboarding
A trust file is reviewed twice: first by the trust company that takes it on, then by the bank. Each asks its own questions, and each question goes back to the settlor or a beneficiary in another time zone. Barclays charges £50 for an account opened in advance when the documents are still incomplete after two weeks, and Butterfield charges £500 to change administrators later.
No Deposit Cover for Trustee Accounts
The Guernsey Banking Deposit Compensation Scheme pays up to £50,000 per qualifying depositor per bank, but trustee accounts are usually not covered. The exceptions are Guernsey charitable trusts and retirement annuity trusts. A trust holding a large cash balance at one island bank has little or no scheme cover.

A Faster and Cheaper Way to Open a Guernsey Business Account for Your Trust
There is a better alternative to the island bank queue. Our regulated banking partners are licensed e-money institutions built for international structures. One of them markets its accounts directly to holding companies, funds and trusts, and both accept complex ownership. For trustees, they open a Guernsey business account in days, fully online, with no branch visit and no yearly risk charge on the published plans.
We prepare the file before the partner sees it: the trust deed or trustee certificate, the trustee's own documents, a chart of every party, identity documents and a written source of wealth for the settlor. Because the structure is explained upfront, the review happens once. Client money is kept in safeguarding accounts at major banks, separate from the partner's own funds.
Be clear about what a partner account does. It receives income, pays costs, funds underlying companies and makes distributions to beneficiaries in many currencies. It does not lend, pay interest or hold securities. A trust with an investment portfolio keeps a custodian or private bank for that, and uses a partner account for payments.
Feature | Guernsey banks | Our partners |
|---|---|---|
Time to open | Several weeks, often 6 to 8 | Days |
Who they accept | Trusts introduced by licensed trust companies | Trusts with named trustees and a clear source of wealth |
Due diligence fees | Up to £10,000 a year for enhanced checks | Free to €500 opening, higher on complex structures |
Yearly risk charges | £2,500 to £5,000 on higher-risk files | None published |
Monthly cost | £12.50 to £20 a month, or up to £40 a quarter | €30 to €100 on standard plans |
Currencies | GBP, other currencies at extra cost | GBP, EUR, USD and many more |
International payments | £13 to £80 each | €15 or less on published plans |
Custody and lending | Available at private banks | Not offered |
For a trust that needs to receive income and pay beneficiaries across borders, our partners are faster and cheaper. A Guernsey private bank can still suit a trust with a large portfolio, alongside the partner account.
Which Trusts Our Partners Accept
Our partners look at Guernsey trusts that hold something real: shares in a family company, property through an underlying company, an investment portfolio or cash from a business sale. The trustees can be a licensed trust company or a private trust company, and the settlor and beneficiaries can live in most countries. What they will not take is a structure that hides who is behind it, money with no clear source, or a trust used for a prohibited industry. We check the fit before you open a Guernsey business account for the trust, so the trustees do not collect a refusal.
How to Open a Bank Account for a Guernsey Trust Online
Knowing how to open a bank account for a Guernsey trust online mostly means having the file ready. The trustees' authorised signatories verify their identity with a passport and a live selfie and sign electronically, which takes about half an hour. We upload the trust documents, answer the partner's questions and tell the trustees when the account is live.

What a Trust Needs From Its Account
A trust uses its account differently from a company. There are fewer payments, but they are larger, they cross borders and each one has to match a trustee decision. Knowing what the account must do helps the trustees choose where to open it.
Receiving Income and Proceeds
A trust receives dividends from underlying companies, rent, investment income or the proceeds of a sale. An account that holds several currencies lets the trustees receive each payment as it is and convert only when they decide to.
Paying Distributions to Beneficiaries
Every distribution needs a trustee resolution, and the payment has to go to the right person in the right country. Beneficiaries who receive discretionary distributions are also reported under the tax transparency rules, so the payment record matters.
Funding Underlying Companies
Many Guernsey trusts hold assets through a company, often a Guernsey holding company or a property company. The trust funds that company by loan or share subscription, and each transfer needs a paper trail.
Paying the Trust's Costs
The account pays the trustee's fees, legal and tax advice, insurance and property costs. Regular, predictable payments are easy for a reviewer to follow, so describe them when the account is opened.
Guernsey Trust Tax and Reporting
Guernsey's tax rules on trusts are simple for international families, and the reporting rules are strict.
Tax on Trusts With Non-Resident Beneficiaries
Where all the income of a trust is payable to beneficiaries living outside Guernsey, the trustees' Guernsey tax is limited to income arising in Guernsey, and Guernsey bank interest is left out of that. Accumulated income from outside Guernsey is not assessed either. The rules change if a Guernsey resident settled the trust and can still benefit, so take tax advice on your own structure.
CRS and FATCA Reporting
A trust run by a professional trust company is usually treated as a financial institution, and the trustee reports the settlor, anyone with ultimate control, fixed beneficiaries and anyone who receives a discretionary distribution. Where the trust is not a financial institution, the bank reports the trust's controlling persons instead. The updated standard, CRS 2.0, has applied in Guernsey since 1 January 2026 and asks for the role of each controlling person. Returns for 2025 were due by 30 June 2026, and late filing costs £300 and then a daily penalty.
Documents to Open a Bank Account for a Guernsey Trust
The documents to open a bank account for a Guernsey trust cover the trust itself, the trustees and every person with a role in it. We gather them with the trust company and write the parts reviewers care about most, so they arrive complete and in order.
The Trust Deed and Trustee Documents
Start with a certified copy of the trust deed, or a trustee certificate confirming the trust's name, date, governing law, trustees and powers. Add any deeds of appointment or retirement of trustees. Where the trustee is a company, add its certificate of incorporation, registers, licence details and a board resolution naming the signatories.
Identification of Every Party
Of all the documents to open a bank account for a Guernsey trust, the party list matters most. Each settlor, trustee, protector and named beneficiary who is a natural person provides a certified passport and a recent proof of address. For a discretionary class, describe the class clearly and name anyone who has already received a distribution.
Source of Wealth and Purpose
Write the settlor's source of wealth with evidence: a business sale, years of dividends, property sales or an inheritance. Then explain the purpose of the trust and the payments the account will see, such as income in, distributions out and costs.
Underlying Companies
Where the trust holds assets through companies, add each company's documents and a chart showing the trust at the top. A trust that owns more than 25% of a Guernsey company makes the trustee a beneficial owner of that company, so the company's register and the trust file must match.

Prepare Your Guernsey Trust Bank Account File
A Guernsey trust bank account opens fastest when every party fits on one page and the settlor's money is traced. We prepare it with you.
- Party chart signed: Settlor, trustees, protector and beneficiaries shown.
- Source of wealth written: Clear, evidenced and in the format reviewers use.
- Trustee pack: Deed, appointments, licence and signatory resolution.
- Underlying companies linked: Registers matched to the trust file.
- Trust company coordinated: We work directly with your licensed trustee.
Guernsey Trust Bank Account Costs
A Guernsey trust bank account at a local bank looks cheap on the monthly fee. The real cost is in risk charges, due diligence fees and payment fees. The table sets typical ranges at Guernsey banks against our partners' published plans.
Charge | Typical range at a Guernsey bank | With our partners |
|---|---|---|
Account opening or onboarding | Agreed with the relationship manager | Free to €500, higher on complex structures |
Monthly or quarterly maintenance | £12.50 to £20 a month, or £17.50 to £40 a quarter | €30 to €100 a month on standard plans |
Fiduciary proposition fee | £500 a year | None |
Enhanced due diligence fee | Up to £10,000 a year per entity | None published |
Yearly high-risk charge | £2,500 | None published |
Yearly charge where a PEP is involved | £4,500 to £5,000 or more | None published |
International payments out, online | £13 to £25 | €15 or less on published plans |
International payments out, manual | £25 to £80 | Not needed, everything runs online |
International payments in | £6 to £7 | Free to €5 |
Additional currency accounts | £15 a month each at some banks | Free |
Currency conversion | Bank rate with a wide margin | Low margin, shown before you confirm |
Change of administrator | £500 at some banks | Update the file, no published fee |
Custody of investments | 0.15% to 0.20% a year, minimum £375 a quarter | Not offered, keep a custodian if needed |
Deposit protection for trustee accounts | Usually none under the island scheme | Funds safeguarded at major banks |
For a bank account for a Guernsey trust, the monthly fee is the smallest cost. A PEP in the structure can add £4,500 or more a year before a payment moves, and one enhanced due diligence fee can cost more than several years on a partner plan. The money is also lost in conversion: a 2% margin on €500,000 of income and distributions a year costs €10,000, before any SWIFT fees. A Guernsey private bank can still be the better choice where the trust needs custody, lending or investment management. All figures are planning ranges drawn from published tariffs, and we confirm your final price in writing before you apply.

How Long a Guernsey Trust Bank Account Takes
A Guernsey trust bank account takes several weeks at an island bank, because the trust company and the bank each review the file. HSBC in the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man tells local businesses that opening typically takes six to eight weeks, and trust files usually take longer. With our partners, the account opens in days once the documents are complete.
Stage | Guernsey bank | Our partners |
|---|---|---|
Preparing the bank file | 1 to 3 weeks with the trust company | A few days, built with us |
Review and follow-up questions | Several weeks | A few days |
Account open and ready | 6 to 8 weeks or more | Days after the file is complete |
What Slows It Down
The usual delays are a beneficiary or protector missing from the chart, a settlor's source of wealth with no evidence, an underlying company with no documents and a PEP disclosed late. Every missing item restarts part of the review.
How to Speed It Up
Build the party chart and source of wealth first, collect every identity document in one round, and answer questions the same day. Apply once, through a trustee that the bank or partner already knows.

What Happens After the Account Is Open
After the account opens, fund it, add the trustees' authorised users and set up the regular payments. Some partner plans ask for a first deposit within 30 days, and we confirm the amount before the trustees sign.
A bank account for a Guernsey trust stays open when its file stays current, because banks and partners review trusts regularly. Tell them about new trustees, a change of protector, new beneficiaries receiving distributions, and new underlying companies. Update the CRS self-certification whenever a controlling person changes.
Unpaid family trustees also have duties of their own. Since 16 October 2023, unregulated trustees must keep records on the settlors, co-trustees, protectors, beneficiaries and service providers, tell banks they are acting as trustees, and keep records for at least five years after the trust ends. Breaking these rules is a criminal offence.
Why the Structure Comes Before the Account
A bank can only review a Guernsey trust that is properly constituted, with a signed deed, trustees in place and any underlying companies on the register. Many trusts hold their assets through a Guernsey company, which keeps the trust's investments in one place and makes the banking simpler. If the company does not exist yet, we form it with our licensed Guernsey partners and prepare the bank file at the same time.

Common Guernsey Trust Banking Mistakes
Most problems with a Guernsey trust bank account come from how the trust is presented, not from the trust itself. These are the mistakes we see most, and they explain why Guernsey trust bank accounts get rejected.
Leaving a Party Out
A protector, an enforcer or a beneficiary who has already received money is left off the chart. The bank finds out later, and the review starts again.
Describing the Settlor's Wealth in One Line
"Family wealth" is not a source of wealth. Show how the money was made and how it reached the trust.
Applying Without a Licensed Trustee
Most Guernsey banks take trust business through licensed trust companies. A family trust that tries to open a business bank account in Guernsey on its own is usually turned away.
Mixing Trust Money and Personal Money
Trust money paid through a personal account, or personal costs paid from the trust, breaks the paper trail and worries every reviewer.
Keeping Large Balances at One Bank
Trustee accounts usually have no cover under the Guernsey scheme. Plan where a large sale payment sits before it arrives.
Get Help With a Guernsey Trust Bank Account
Trust banking is very manageable when the structure is planned with the bank in mind. Talk to us before the trustees apply.
- Structure checked first: We confirm a partner can bank your trust.
- Private trust companies: Licensing and banking planned together.
- Refused before: We review the file and fix the gaps.
- Honest advice: We tell you when a private bank or custodian should sit alongside.
- One point of contact: From the first call to the first distribution.
Bottom Line
A bank account for a Guernsey trust is harder to open than the trust is to set up. Guernsey banks take trust business through licensed trustees, identify every party, check the settlor's source of wealth and charge for the risk they see.
For trusts that need to receive income and pay beneficiaries across borders, the faster route is a regulated partner built for complex structures. Knowing how to open a bank account for a Guernsey trust before the money moves keeps everything on time. Most of the reasons why Guernsey trust bank accounts get rejected come down to a missing party or a thin source of wealth, and a complete file fixes both.
