A forex payment gateway lets your brokerage take client deposits by Visa and Mastercard, send refunds back to the same cards and settle in the currencies clients use. Card deposits are the fastest way for a new client to fund an account, so they turn more sign-ups into active traders.
Approval takes more work than for a normal store. Visa and Mastercard class online trading as high risk, and only acquirers registered with both schemes for trading merchants can take you on. Some mainstream processors ban funded prop trading and restrict brokerage. Acquirers also check your licence, client onboarding and withdrawal process before approving a single deposit.
This is where Binderr steps in. You tell us about your business in one short form, Binderr Chooses, and we pick a regulated partner that accepts forex brokers and prop firms. We prepare the file acquirers review, from licence to website risk warnings, and run the application with you. Most brokers take card deposits within 5 to 7 business days.

What Is a Forex Payment Gateway?
A forex payment gateway is the link between the deposit page in your client portal and an acquirer that has agreed to process card payments for a trading business. The client enters a card, the gateway sends the payment to the card issuer for approval, and the approved amount is credited to the trading account and settled to your merchant account. For the basic flow, see what a payment gateway is. A broker's gateway also has to work in reverse. It sends refunds and payouts back to clients every day, which a normal online shop almost never does.
Why Card Schemes Treat Forex as High Risk
A card deposit to a broker is not a normal purchase. The client is not buying a product. They are moving money into an account where it can be lost in a few trades, and a client who loses money has a reason to dispute the deposit. The sector also has a history of unlicensed brokers and binary options sites that took deposits and refused withdrawals, which is one reason EU regulators banned binary options for retail clients in 2018. Visa lists financial trading platforms under MCC 6211 as Tier 3 high integrity risk merchants, and Mastercard requires each high-risk securities merchant to be registered before its acquirer processes a payment. Our list of high risk merchant industries and MCC codes shows where forex sits next to other sectors.
Forex Broker Payment Gateway vs Mainstream Processors
Stripe lists investment and brokerage services as a restricted business that needs extra review, and it prohibits funded prop trading outright. PayPal's acceptable use policy requires pre-approval before a business takes payments for buying, selling or brokering securities, contracts for difference or forex. A broker that opens a mainstream account without that approval risks losing it when the review catches up, often with client money held while it happens. A forex broker payment gateway works the other way round. The acquirer checks your licence, onboarding and website first, registers you with the schemes, and only then processes your first deposit. Our guide to how high risk payment processing works explains the model behind it.
What a Payment Gateway for Forex Has to Handle
A broker needs more from a gateway than a shop does. The core list is short but strict:
- Card deposits with 3D Secure: authenticated payments, so fraud claims shift to the card issuer
- Name matching: deposits accepted only from cards in the account holder's name
- Refunds to source: money sent back to the same card that funded the account
- Payouts: profits paid by bank transfer or, where supported, straight to a card
- Several currencies: deposits in the client's currency, settlement in the ones you hold
- A CRM connection: deposits credited to the trading account without manual work
- Other payment methods: bank transfers and local methods for larger deposits and other markets
The gateway software for all of this is easy to find. What is scarce is an acquirer behind it that is registered for trading merchants with both card schemes and wants to keep a broker for years.
Start Taking Card Deposits on a Forex Payment Gateway
We pick a regulated partner that accepts your brokerage, and we prepare everything its underwriters check.
- Forex accepted: underwritten for trading from day one, not closed after a review.
- Scheme registration done: Visa and Mastercard sign-off before your first deposit.
- Both directions: card deposits in, refunds and payouts back to clients.
- Major currencies: deposits and settlement in USD, EUR, GBP and more.
- 3D Secure on deposits: authenticated payments that cut fraud losses.
- Live in about a week: most brokers take deposits within 5 to 7 business days.
Card Scheme Rules for a Forex Payment Gateway
Before an acquirer can process a deposit for you, each card scheme must have cleared it to handle trading merchants, and it must register you with both. This is the main reason forex takes longer to set up than a normal store, and why many acquirers do not offer it at all. Our guide to Visa and Mastercard high risk merchant registration covers the process across sectors.
Visa Tier 3 and MCC 6211
Visa's Integrity Risk Program places financial trading platforms, card absent, under MCC 6211 in Tier 3. An acquirer must hold Visa's high integrity risk registration before it can sign up or process for any high integrity risk merchant. For each broker, it must review your control environment before onboarding, monitor you to stop illegal transactions and register you with Visa before it submits a payment. It must also update that registration when your activity changes, for example when you add a website URL. A new brand, domain or white label is exactly that kind of change, so tell your acquirer before you launch it. If you also run a crypto exchange or wallet, that activity sits in Tier 2, and an acquirer approved for Tier 3 only cannot take it.
Mastercard High-Risk Securities Registration
Mastercard added high-risk securities merchants to its registration rules in 2018, and the new standards applied from 12 October 2018. The category covers binary options, CFDs, forex and cryptocurrency options. Before registering you, the acquirer must hold a copy of your licence or, where your activity is not regulated in your country, a legal opinion from a reputable local law firm. Your payments run under MCC 6211 and carry Mastercard's own code for a high-risk securities transaction. Without the licence or the legal opinion, the acquirer cannot process for you.
Mastercard Fees for Trading Merchants in 2026
Mastercard raised the cost of this registration in 2026. From 1 May 2026, acquirers in the United States, the Middle East and Africa, and selected Asia Pacific and Latin American countries pay USD 1,000 a year for each registered specialty merchant and a new high-risk acquirer licence fee of USD 50,000 a year. From 3 June 2026, Mastercard also charges 10 basis points of volume and USD 0.02 per transaction on high-risk securities payments in those regions. Acquirers there that chose not to take the licence had to unregister and end every specialty merchant relationship. Expect acquirers in these regions to build the new costs into your pricing, and ask whether the registration fee is billed to you separately.
What Scheme Registration Means for Approval Time
You do not file anything with Visa or Mastercard yourself. The acquirer does, using the file you give it: your licence, your websites, your brands and your client countries. Every URL that takes deposits has to be declared, including white labels and introducing broker pages that send clients to your checkout. A file that lists all of them at the start keeps registration inside our partners' usual 5 to 7 business days. One that adds them later means another round of questions.

How to Get a Payment Gateway for Forex Brokers
To get a payment gateway for forex brokers approved, you need four things: a licence that covers your clients, a client onboarding process that works, a website that meets your regulator's rules and a complete company file. The acquirer checks all four before it registers you. Gaps in any of them are what slow an application down.
Your Licence and Regulator
For forex brokers, payment gateway approval starts with the licence, and it shapes everything after it. Brokers licensed by the FCA in the UK, CySEC in Cyprus or ASIC in Australia are the easiest to approve, because those regulators supervise client money, leverage and marketing. Offshore licences, such as those issued in Seychelles or Mauritius, are accepted by fewer acquirers and usually come with a higher reserve. A broker with no licence, or one registered where forex is not regulated at all, needs the legal opinion Mastercard asks for, and many acquirers will decline it even then.
The licence must also match the clients you take. An EU licence does not let you onboard US residents. In the US, retail forex can only be offered by firms registered with the CFTC that are members of the NFA, with leverage capped at 50:1 on major currency pairs and 20:1 on the rest. Acquirers expect you to block every country your licence does not cover. Our guide to offshore high risk merchant accounts covers the options for brokers licensed outside the main regulators.
Client Onboarding and KYC Checks
Acquirers want proof that you know every client who deposits. That means ID and address checks, sanctions and PEP screening, and source of funds checks once deposits pass your risk limits. EU-licensed brokers must also run the appropriateness test MiFID II requires before a retail client trades CFDs. The name on the card must match the name on the trading account, and cards in another person's name should be refused at the deposit page. The client onboarding process in financial services covers the steps, and our guide on how to verify source of funds covers the larger deposits.
Website Risk Warnings and Restricted Countries
The acquirer reads your website the way a regulator would. It looks for the licence number and regulator, the legal entity and its address, the client agreement, the complaints and order execution policies, the withdrawal policy and a risk warning on every page. For EU and UK brokers, it also checks that the leverage you advertise matches the limits below. An EU-licensed brand showing 1:500 leverage to retail visitors from Europe is a red flag, and you will be asked about it.
In 2018 ESMA restricted CFDs for retail clients across the EU. The measures set the leverage limits in the table, a margin close-out when equity falls to 50% of the required margin, negative balance protection, limits on trading incentives and a standard risk warning showing the percentage of retail accounts that lose money. ESMA also banned binary options for retail clients. The rules now sit in national law. CySEC applies them in Cyprus, and the FCA applies the same leverage limits in the UK, where crypto derivatives have been banned for retail clients since January 2021.
Underlying asset | Maximum retail leverage |
|---|---|
Major currency pairs | 30:1 |
Non-major currency pairs, gold and major indices | 20:1 |
Other commodities and non-major equity indices | 10:1 |
Individual shares and other assets | 5:1 |
Cryptocurrencies | 2:1 |
Blocked countries matter as much as the warnings. Acquirers expect you to refuse clients from countries under comprehensive sanctions, from the US unless you are registered there, and from any country your licence does not cover. They want it enforced at sign-up, not only written in your terms. The sanctions lists guide explains which lists to screen against.
Documents Needed for a Forex Broker Payment Gateway
You apply as a company. Expect to provide the certificate of incorporation, the registers of directors and shareholders, proof of ownership down to the ultimate beneficial owners, ID and proof of address for directors and owners, the licence itself and a business bank account for settlement. Acquirers run the same business verification checks payment firms are required to run, so a gap in the ownership chain stops the file early. If you already process cards, three to six months of statements showing deposits, refunds and chargebacks are the strongest evidence you can give. A new broker can still be approved, usually with a higher reserve for the first months.
If you are still forming the company, how to set up a company covers the first step. If your bank is wary of a trading business, our guide on how to open a high risk bank account covers the settlement account.
Get Your Forex Broker Payment Gateway Approved First Time
Most declines trace back to a gap in the file, so we close the gaps before an acquirer sees it.
- Licence checked: your regulator and permissions matched to your client countries.
- Onboarding reviewed: KYC, screening and name matching tested before submission.
- Website fixed: risk warnings, leverage and blocked countries set right.
- KYC pack prepared: company, owner and director documents in one file.
- A straight answer: what is realistic for your licence, before you apply.
- Preliminary answer fast: usually within 1 business day.
- No email chains: one contact deals with the acquirer for you.
Deposits and Withdrawals on a Payment Gateway for Forex
Many forex brokers' payment gateway problems start with withdrawals, not deposits. A client who cannot get money out disputes the money they put in, and Visa's rules give them a clear route to do it. Acquirers therefore look at your withdrawal process as closely as your deposit page.
Return to Source Rules for Withdrawals
Most regulated brokers run a return to source policy. A withdrawal goes back to the card that funded the account, up to the total deposited from that card. Anything above that, usually profit, is paid by bank transfer to an account in the client's own name. So a client who deposits USD 1,000 by card and withdraws USD 1,600 gets USD 1,000 back on the card and USD 600 by bank transfer.
This follows Visa's rule that a refund must go to the same card used for the original payment wherever possible. It is also a basic anti-money laundering control, because it stops a trading account being used to move money from one person's card to another person's bank account. Put the policy in your client agreement and show it on the withdrawal page, so clients know the order before they ask.
Card Payouts for Trading Profits
Some acquirers can also pay profits straight to a card through the schemes' payout services, known as original credit transactions. Under Visa's rules, the card issuer must post the payout within 2 business days, and issuers that take part in Visa's fast funds service must make the money available within 30 minutes. Not every card, country or acquirer supports payouts, so ask before you sign rather than after clients start asking. Our guide to how instant payout payment gateways work covers the mechanics.
Bank Transfers and Local Payment Methods
Cards are the usual route for a first deposit, but larger top-ups often come by bank transfer, which carries no chargeback risk. In Europe, SEPA transfers and open banking payments let a client pay from their bank account in a few clicks. In Asia, Latin America and Africa, local bank transfers and e-wallets reach clients that cards miss. See eCheck and open banking payment gateways for the bank-based options. Some brokers also take crypto deposits, which follow their own rules, set out in how crypto payment gateways work.
Multi-Currency Deposits and Conversion
Clients deposit in their own currency, while trading accounts are often held in USD or EUR. Each conversion by the gateway typically costs around 1% to 2%, and on a broker's volumes that adds up quickly. Settling in the currencies you receive, and holding balances in them, avoids paying it twice, once on the deposit and again on the refund. The detail is in how multi-currency payment gateways work and our guide to international payment gateways.
Connecting to Your Trading Platform and CRM
The gateway has to connect to your forex CRM, which credits the deposit to the client's MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5 or cTrader account and records each withdrawal request. A common setup credits a deposit automatically once it passes 3D Secure and the name check, and holds first deposits above a set amount for manual review. Withdrawals should flow the same way: the CRM sends the refund to the right card and the balance to the right bank account without anyone retyping figures. Manual payouts are where delays, mistakes and disputes start.

What a Forex Payment Gateway Costs
Pricing for brokers reflects two things: the dispute risk the acquirer carries and the cost of registering you with both schemes. The table shows typical market ranges on the lower side for an approved, licensed broker.
Fee | Typical range |
|---|---|
One-off setup | USD 0 to USD 500 |
Monthly account fee | USD 10 to USD 50 |
Processing rate | 2.5% to 5% of each deposit |
Per transaction fee | USD 0.10 to USD 0.35 |
Gateway fee | USD 10 to USD 30 a month, plus USD 0.05 to USD 0.15 per transaction |
Chargeback fee | USD 15 to USD 35 per dispute |
Rolling reserve | 5% to 10% of deposits, held for 90 to 180 days |
Currency conversion | Around 1% to 2% when a conversion is needed |
Take a broker with USD 250,000 a month in card deposits, made up of 500 deposits averaging USD 500. At 3.5% plus USD 0.25 per deposit, processing costs USD 8,750 plus USD 125. Add a gateway fee of USD 25 a month plus USD 0.10 per deposit, which comes to USD 75, and a USD 30 account fee. The month costs USD 8,980, or about 3.6% of deposits. Ask how refunds and payouts are priced as well, because a broker sends money back to clients every day, and those fees are not always in the headline rate. Our guide to high risk merchant account fees and rates goes through each line.
Rolling Reserves and Your Working Capital
With a 10% reserve held for 180 days, the same broker has USD 25,000 held back each month. After six months the acquirer is holding up to USD 150,000, and from then on it releases each month's portion as its hold period ends. Your clients' trading accounts are credited in full when they deposit, so the reserve comes out of your working capital, not theirs. Plan for it before you launch a large campaign. A clean record is the fastest way to have it reduced, and some acquirers review it after six months.
How Long Setup Takes With Our Partners
Our partners work to the timeline below. It assumes a complete file, which is the part we prepare with you. For each step in more detail, see our guide to setting up a high risk payment gateway.
Stage | Typical time |
|---|---|
Quick assessment | 5 minutes |
Preliminary approval | 1 day |
Complete onboarding requirements | 15 minutes |
Provision of services | 3 days |
Total | 5 to 7 business days |
Licence questions, missing ownership documents and website fixes are what push the timeline out. Having them settled before you apply keeps you inside the week, and your forex payment gateway can take its first test deposit soon after.
A Forex Payment Gateway With Terms Agreed Up Front
You see the rate, the reserve and the payout terms in writing before the first client deposit.
- Rate in writing: percentage and fixed fee agreed before you sign.
- Reserve set out: the percentage and hold period fixed from the start.
- Refund costs clear: how returns to source and payouts are priced.
- Scheme fees listed: registration costs set out before you sign.
- Reviews after clean months: rate and reserve looked at again as your record builds.
- Settlement in your currencies: fewer conversions on money in and out.
How a Prop Firm Payment Gateway Works
Prop trading firms sell evaluations. A trader pays a one-off fee, trades a simulated account under set rules and, if they pass, moves to a funded account, often still simulated, where they are paid a share of the profits it shows. For card payments this is the sale of a service, not a deposit to trade, but acquirers still treat it as high risk. Stripe lists funded prop trading as a prohibited business, so a prop firm payment gateway has to come from an acquirer that has chosen to take the model.
Evaluation Fees and What Acquirers Ask
An acquirer looking at a prop firm wants to understand where the money goes. Expect these questions:
- Are funded accounts simulated or traded live, and who provides the platform and price feed?
- Are trader payouts funded from evaluation fees or from trading profits?
- What share of traders pass, and what share receive a payout?
- Where are your traders based, and do you accept US residents?
- Is the evaluation fee refundable, and when?
- Which payout methods do you use, and how quickly are payouts made?
Clear, honest answers matter more than impressive numbers. A firm that cannot explain how its payouts are funded is unlikely to be approved, whatever its volume.
Refund and Dispute Rules for Challenges
Most prop firm disputes follow a failed challenge. The trader tells their bank the service was not as described, or that they never agreed to the rule that ended the challenge. Under Visa's rules, an online merchant that limits refunds must show its refund policy before checkout, with a click to accept box or similar acknowledgement. So put the refund policy and the key trading rules, such as daily loss limits, maximum drawdown and banned strategies, on the checkout page with a tick box. Keep the logs too: the time of acceptance, IP address, logins and every trade on the account. That record is what wins the dispute.
What the My Forex Funds Case Shows
In August 2023 the CFTC sued Traders Global Group, the company behind My Forex Funds, alleging a large-scale fraud involving retail forex and commodity transactions. A court froze its assets and placed the business in receivership, and it stopped operating. On 13 May 2025 the US District Court for the District of New Jersey dismissed the case with prejudice and sanctioned the CFTC for misleading the court. The firm won, but only after its business had been shut for more than 20 months.
For acquirers, the lesson is that a regulatory action can stop a prop firm's payments and payouts overnight, whatever the final outcome. That is why they ask about your structure, your US exposure and whether you act as the counterparty to your traders' trades.

Chargebacks on a Forex Broker Payment Gateway
Chargebacks decide how long a broker keeps its card processing. The schemes watch dispute ratios every month, and acquirers watch trading merchants more closely than most.
Why Traders Dispute Card Deposits
Many forex disputes follow a loss. A client deposits, trades, loses and then tells the bank the payment was not authorised, or that the service was not what was promised. Some are real fraud, with stolen cards used to fund accounts. Others come from clients who asked for a withdrawal and did not get it. Each type needs a different defence, and the evidence has to exist before the dispute arrives.
Withdrawal Delays and Visa's Misrepresentation Rule
Visa's dispute condition 13.5, misrepresentation, names investment services such as binary options and forex trading where the merchant refuses to let the cardholder withdraw an available balance. The issuer backs the claim with the client's account statement showing the balance and the withdrawal request. Normal time limits apply, but the outer limit is 540 days from the deposit. In practice, every withdrawal request left unpaid is a possible dispute on the original deposit. Paying withdrawals on time, and explaining any hold in writing, is the cheapest dispute control a broker has.
Evidence That Wins a Forex Dispute
For forex brokers, payment gateway data and trading records together make the case. Keep all of this for every deposit:
- KYC match: ID and address showing the cardholder is the account holder
- 3D Secure result: proof the deposit was authenticated by the card issuer
- Deposit confirmation: the email or message sent when the account was credited
- Login and IP logs: the sessions before and after the deposit, with device details
- Trading history: every trade placed, with times, sizes and results
- Withdrawal records: requests, payments made and any written reason for a hold
Visa's compelling evidence rules also help with repeat clients. Against a card-absent fraud claim, two earlier payments on the same card that were not reported as fraud, made between 120 and 365 days before the dispute, can make the dispute invalid. At least two details must match the disputed deposit, and one of them must be the IP address or the device, for example the IP address plus the login ID. Brokers hold this data already, because every deposit happens inside a logged-in client portal.
Scheme Monitoring Thresholds for Brokers
Visa flags an online merchant under its acquirer monitoring programme when fraud and disputes together reach 1.5% of transactions, with a minimum of 1,500 cases a month, in the US, Canada, Europe and Asia Pacific. For Mastercard, the excessive chargeback line is 100 chargebacks and a 1.5% ratio in one month. Acquirers step in well before either line, usually around 1%. A broker terminated for excessive disputes can be placed on Mastercard's MATCH list for 5 years, which blocks it from most acquirers, as what the Mastercard MATCH list is explains. Chargeback alerts let you refund before a claim becomes a dispute, and chargeback management for high risk merchants covers the tools.
Payment Gateway for Forex Built to Keep Disputes Low
Fewer disputes mean a lower reserve and an account that lasts, so the setup is built around them from day one.
- 3D Secure on every deposit: fraud claims shift to the card issuer.
- Third-party cards blocked: only cards in the account holder's name.
- Dispute alerts: refund before a claim turns into a chargeback.
- Evidence kept: KYC, logins and trade history ready for every deposit.
- Payouts that work: return to source and bank payouts set up at launch.
- Ratios in view: disputes tracked well below the 1.5% scheme lines.
Best Payment Gateways for Forex Brokers in 2026
There is no single ranking of the best payment gateways for forex brokers in 2026, because the right one depends on your licence, your client countries and your volumes. What the good ones have in common is clearer. They approve you properly, pay your clients out on time and are still processing for you a year later. Picking the best payment gateway for a forex broker comes down to the five points below, and they are what we check before we place a broker with a partner.
Registered for Trading With Both Schemes
Any payment gateway for forex brokers has to sit on an acquirer that holds Visa's high integrity risk registration and can register high-risk securities merchants with Mastercard. An acquirer without both cannot register you, however good its rate. Ask for confirmation in writing before you sign.
Refunds and Payouts as Well as Deposits
A gateway built for shops handles deposits well and treats refunds as an afterthought. A broker needs returns to source, bank payouts and, ideally, card payouts, all linked to the CRM so withdrawals run on time. Ask how failed payouts are handled and how quickly a refund reaches the card.
Local Methods in Your Client Countries
If most of your clients are in Latin America, Asia or Africa, cards are only part of the answer. The right setup adds the bank transfers and local methods your clients already use, settled in currencies you can hold.
Terms That Improve With Your Record
Look for a written review of the rate and reserve after six to twelve months of clean processing. A partner that will not commit to a review will keep pricing you as a new, unproven broker. For a wider checklist, see what to look for in a payment gateway provider.
A Second Route for Card Deposits
A broker that depends on one acquirer loses every card deposit on the day that acquirer pauses the account. The safer setup is two acquirers, or one acquirer plus strong bank transfer and local methods, so a pause slows deposits instead of stopping them. Our guide to how credit card payment gateways work shows how a card payment travels, which helps when you plan routing across more than one acquirer.
Let Us Run Your Forex Payment Gateway Application
Apply once, and we pick the partner, build the file and deal with the acquirer until you are live.
- We pick the partner: chosen for your licence, client countries and volumes.
- Brokers and prop firms: both accepted, each on terms that fit the model.
- File built for you: licence, KYC pack, website and policies checked.
- One application: prepared once, not repeated after a decline.
- Changes handled later: new brands, URLs and countries declared for you.
- Live in 5 to 7 business days: for most brokers with a complete file.
Bottom Line
A forex payment gateway is approved on your licence, your onboarding and your withdrawals, not on your volume. The brokers that keep one hold a licence that matches their clients, show the risk warnings and leverage limits their regulator sets, refuse third-party cards, pay withdrawals on time and tell their acquirer before they add a brand or a country. A prop firm payment gateway needs the same discipline on refund rules and payout funding. The best payment gateways for forex brokers in 2026 reward exactly that record with lower reserves and better rates.
We set it up through one intake form with a regulated partner that accepts forex, and most brokers are live within 5 to 7 business days. The best payment gateway for a forex broker is the one that approves the file you actually have and keeps you processing, and that file is the part we build with you.
