How to Get a Payment Gateway for a Dating Site in 2026

A payment gateway for a dating site lets you bill members by card for subscriptions, credit packs and premium features, on your website and in your app. It stores cards for automatic renewals, charges members in their own currency and pays the money into your merchant account, so recurring revenue arrives on time.

Approval takes more work than in most online sectors. Visa places dating in the strictest tier of its integrity risk program, next to adult content and gambling, so only acquirers with a separate Visa approval can take you on. Mainstream processors restrict dating or want to approve it first, and acquirers look closely at forgotten renewals, romance scammers and stolen cards.

This is where we help. You complete one short intake form, Binderr Chooses, and we place you with a regulated partner that accepts dating platforms. We prepare the file the acquirer reviews, from renewal terms to moderation controls, and run the application with you. Most dating businesses take card payments within 5 to 7 business days.

What Is a Payment Gateway for a Dating Site?

A payment gateway for a dating site is the service that collects a member's card details at checkout, sends the payment to the card network for approval and returns the answer to your site or app. Approved payments go to a merchant account held with an acquirer, the bank that has agreed to process cards for your business, and then settle to your business bank account. On a dating platform the gateway also stores cards for renewals, charges credit packs and retries renewals that fail. The basic flow is explained in what a payment gateway is and how it works. The software is standard. The acquirer behind it is what decides whether a dating business can take cards at all.

Why Card Schemes Treat Dating as High Risk

Online dating is legal in most countries, and most members pay for ordinary things: a monthly plan, extra likes, a profile boost or a pack of message credits. The card schemes still treat it as high risk, for three reasons. The card code for dating is shared with escort services, which can hide prostitution and trafficking. Dating platforms attract romance scammers, who use fake profiles to build trust and then ask for money. Most dating revenue is also recurring, and renewals that members forget are one of the most common reasons for card disputes. Each of these risks lands on the acquirer first. That is why many acquirers do not take dating at all, and those that do build the risk into their rates and reserves.

Dating Payment Gateway vs Mainstream Processors

Stripe lists online dating and matchmaking as a restricted business that needs extra due diligence, does not allow dating at all in some countries, including India and Thailand, and prohibits escort services and adult live chat everywhere. PayPal requires pre-approval for any dating service that helps people meet for a personal or romantic relationship. Many founders open an account anyway and find out where they stand at the first review. If the review goes against them, the account closes, the balance can be held for months and every renewal stops at once. With a dating payment gateway on a specialist acquirer, the review happens before your first payment, you are registered with Visa for dating, and the approval holds as you grow. How high risk payment processing works covers the model behind it.

Dating Sites vs Adult and Escort Services

Acquirers draw a hard line between mainstream dating and adult business. A dating site sells access to profiles, matching and messaging so that people can meet. An escort service sells paid companionship, and most acquirers decline it in every market. Adult sites that sell explicit content, cam shows or paid adult chat use a different card code, MCC 5967, and are underwritten as adult merchants. If a dating site lets members sell explicit photos, run paid private shows or advertise paid meetings, the acquirer will treat the whole platform as adult or escort, whatever the site calls itself. If that is your model, payment gateways for adult businesses is the guide to read. The rest of this one covers mainstream dating sites and apps.

Take Card Payments With a Dating Payment Gateway

Subscriptions, credits and premium features billed by card, through a regulated partner with Visa approval for dating.

  • Dating accepted: a partner approved for dating, so no surprise closure later.
  • Visa registration covered: we give the acquirer what it needs to register you.
  • Renewals built in: stored cards, retries and card updates for every plan.
  • Web and app checkout: one account for your site and your app users.
  • Local currencies: bill members in USD, EUR, GBP and more.
  • About a week to go live: most platforms process within 5 to 7 business days.

Visa and Mastercard Rules for Dating Platforms

The card schemes decide which acquirers may take dating merchants and what those acquirers must check before and after approval. Visa's rules are the strictest and shape every application in this sector.

Visa Tier 1 and MCC 7273

Visa's Merchant Data Standards Manual places dating and escort services, including online dating, under merchant category code 7273. Since the Visa Integrity Risk Program replaced the Global Brand Protection Program in 2023, card-absent merchants under MCC 7273 have been Tier 1 high integrity risk, alongside adult content, gambling and online pharmacies. Tier 1 covers business types where illegal activity could harm people's health, safety or wellbeing. An acquirer needs Visa's high integrity risk registration before it signs any merchant in these categories, and a separate, additional approval for each Tier 1 category. Visa's own example is an acquirer approved for adult content that wants to add dating: it has to apply again. Each approval brings an initial control assessment and a yearly self-assessment, which is why payment gateways for dating platforms come from a small group of acquirers.

What Visa Registration Means for Your Application

Before an acquirer can switch on a payment gateway for a dating site, it must run enhanced due diligence on your controls, confirm to Visa that you passed and register you with Visa. The registration lists your websites and must be updated when they change, and the acquirer confirms every year that you still meet the program. Visa can charge an acquirer that skips registration USD 100,000 a month in the Tier 1 categories, plus USD 2,000 a month for each merchant it failed to register, so serious acquirers do not take shortcuts. After approval, the acquirer records your daily sales, average ticket, number of payments and disputes, and from the 31st day after your first deposit it compares every day against your normal pattern. Visa and Mastercard high risk merchant registration walks through the process.

How Mastercard Treats Dating Merchants

Mastercard runs its own registration for specialty merchants, covering adult content and services, gambling, pharmacies and tobacco, crypto and a few other categories. Mainstream dating is not on that list, so a dating site does not need Mastercard specialty registration. That changes if the platform carries adult content. It then counts as an adult merchant for Mastercard as well, and since May 2026 acquirers in the US and several other regions pay Mastercard USD 1,000 a year for each registered specialty merchant, plus per-transaction fees since June 2026. Mastercard's chargeback programmes apply to dating in full, as covered further down.

Using the Right Card Code for Dating

Card issuers see your merchant category code on every payment, and it is how they know you run a dating business. Visa requires the high integrity risk code for that line of business, so a company that runs a dating app and an unrelated product must put the dating sales under 7273 and the rest under their own code. Some founders try to get approved as a software, social media or personal services business instead. The schemes treat that as transaction laundering. When it is found, the account is closed, funds are held and the business and its owners can be added to Mastercard's MATCH list for 5 years, which shuts them out of most acquirers. Our list of high risk merchant industries and MCC codes shows how codes are assigned, and what the Mastercard MATCH list is explains how a listing works.

How to Get a Dating Site Payment Gateway

To get a dating site payment gateway, you apply as a company and show the acquirer four things: who owns the business, what members pay for, how they cancel, and how you keep scammers, minors and sex work off the platform. Because dating is Tier 1, the acquirer has to be able to show Visa what it checked, so expect detailed questions. A complete file on the first submission is what keeps approval inside a week.

Documents Needed for a Dating Payment Gateway

Expect to provide your certificate of incorporation, articles, a register of shareholders that traces ownership down to the individuals behind the company, ID and proof of address for directors and owners, and a business bank account for settlement. Acquirers run the same business verification checks payment companies must complete on every applicant. Add a short business description, your pricing, projected monthly volume by country, your average ticket, and your refund and dispute rates if you already take cards. If your bank is wary of dating, how to open a high risk bank account covers the options, and how to set up a company covers the first step if you have not formed one yet.

Website and App Rules Acquirers Check

Before approving a payment gateway for a dating website, the reviewer signs up as a member would. They want to see the price and the billing period before payment, the renewal terms next to the pay button, a cancel option in the account settings, a refund policy, terms of use, a privacy policy, a support contact and your company's country before checkout. They read your community rules for a clear ban on escorting, paid sex, solicitation and scams, and they check that members can report and block other users.

Some rules are specific to dating. New Jersey's Internet Dating Safety Act requires online dating services with members in the state to show safety tips and to state clearly whether they run criminal background checks. The state settled with Bumble for USD 315,000 in February 2024 and with Match Group for USD 650,000 in September 2026 over how they described their screening. Acquirers do not enforce state law, but a platform that already meets rules like these reads as a lower risk.

Age Checks and Identity Verification

Mainstream dating is for adults only. Acquirers expect an 18+ rule in your terms, a date of birth at sign-up and a process to remove under-age accounts when they are reported. Many platforms now add a selfie check that matches a live face to the profile photos, which cuts fake profiles as well as minors. Keeping adult content off the platform also keeps age checks simple: in the UK, the Online Safety Act has required highly effective age checks on services that allow pornography since 25 July 2025. Our overview of AI-powered ID verification and fraud detection tools compares the options platforms use.

Moderation and Scam Controls

Acquirers ask how you find and remove fake profiles and scammers, because scam victims and stolen cards both turn into disputes. Describe your checks at sign-up, the signals you watch after it, such as one account messaging hundreds of members, pushing chats off the platform or mentioning gift cards and crypto investments, and how fast your team acts on reports. Say how many accounts you remove each month and what happens to any paid time they have left. A written moderation policy with real numbers carries more weight than a promise.

Processing History and New Platforms

If you already take cards, three to six months of processing statements with low dispute rates are the strongest evidence you can give. A new platform can still get a payment gateway for a dating site approved, usually with a higher reserve or a monthly cap at the start. Show the reviewer your launch plan, the countries you will market to and where your traffic comes from. Affiliate traffic that promises members things the site does not deliver is a common cause of disputes, so explain how you control it.

Dating Site Payment Gateway With Your File Prepared

We build the file acquirers ask dating platforms for, so the reviewer has nothing to send back.

  • Checkout reviewed: price, renewal terms and cancel link checked first.
  • Safety pages in place: community rules, reporting tools and screening notices.
  • Age gate confirmed: 18+ rule, date of birth and removal of under-age accounts.
  • Company pack built: owners, directors and bank documents in one file.
  • Moderation explained: how you remove scammers, written the way reviewers read it.
  • Questions handled: we answer the acquirer so you do not have to.
  • Answer in a day: preliminary approval in about 1 business day.

Dating Subscriptions, Credits and App Store Billing

Most dating revenue is recurring, so subscription rules shape your checkout, your emails and your dispute rate. Several of them changed in 2025 and 2026, and anyone reviewing a payment gateway for a dating site will test your flow against them.

Visa Rules for Trials and Renewals

Visa's rules for recurring payments apply to every dating plan. You must offer a simple way to cancel, online if the member signed up online, and state the dates or intervals of each charge. When a free trial, introductory price or promotion is about to end, you must email or message the member at least 7 days before the next charge with the amount, the date and a link to cancel online or by text. In Europe you must also remind members before a renewal when more than 6 months have passed since the last charge, which catches 6 and 12 month plans, and show the trial length, the amounts and the cancellation terms on the checkout page itself. How subscription payment gateways work covers these rules in full.

Auto-Renewal Laws in the US and EU

In the US, the Restore Online Shoppers' Confidence Act requires clear terms before billing, the member's express consent and a simple way to stop recurring charges. The FTC's wider click-to-cancel rule was struck down by the Eighth Circuit on 8 July 2025, but ROSCA and state laws still apply. California's amended automatic renewal law, in force since 1 July 2025, requires express consent to the renewal terms, an online cancel button, a yearly reminder and notice 7 to 30 days before a price rise.

In the EU, online traders have had to offer a withdrawal button since 19 June 2026, so members can use their 14-day right of withdrawal in a few clicks. Germany has required a cancellation button for online subscriptions since July 2022. A checkout built to the strictest of these rules works in every market you sell to.

What the Match Group Settlement Shows

On 12 August 2025 the FTC announced that Match Group would pay USD 14 million to settle its case. The FTC said Match offered a free six months to members who did not meet someone special without making the conditions clear, made cancelling hard, and suspended the accounts of members whose billing disputes failed, keeping their money without giving them the service. The order requires clear guarantee terms, simple cancellation and no action against members who dispute a charge. Acquirers read cases like this closely, because each of those practices produces chargebacks. If you offer a guarantee, publish every condition next to it. If you ban a member for a safety reason, your terms should say what happens to the paid time left.

Credits, Boosts and Premium Features

One-off purchases need the same care as plans. Show what each credit, boost or premium feature does and how long it lasts before the member pays. State whether unused credits expire and whether they can be refunded, and never top up a balance automatically unless the member agreed to it as a recurring charge. In the EU, a member loses the right to withdraw from a digital purchase once it is delivered, but only if they asked for immediate delivery and confirmed they would lose that right, so put that consent in the checkout. Clear credit terms are your evidence when a member later says they never used what they bought.

Web Checkout After the Apple and Google Rulings

App store billing used to be the only way to charge inside a dating app. That has changed in the US. Since a court order of 30 April 2025, apps on Apple's US App Store can link members to an outside web checkout. On 11 December 2025 the Ninth Circuit upheld that order but said Apple may seek a commission limited to its real costs of handling linked purchases, and that amount is still being argued. On 30 June 2026 the Supreme Court agreed to hear Apple's appeal. Google Play has run US programmes for external links and alternative billing since 9 December 2025, with Google's service fees on those sales reported from October 2026.

For a dating app, web checkout can reduce what you pay in store fees on US sales and gives you the billing relationship with the member, but only with your own gateway and merchant account behind it. Tell your acquirer how much volume will come from app users, because those payments follow the same Visa rules as your website. How mobile app payment gateways work covers the set-up.

What a Dating Payment Gateway Costs

A dating payment gateway costs more than a standard one because the acquirer carries Tier 1 risk and a heavier monitoring load. You pay a percentage of each payment, a small fixed fee per transaction and usually a rolling reserve. These are typical market ranges on the lower side for an approved dating merchant.

Fee

Typical range

Setup fee

USD 0 to USD 500

Monthly account fee

USD 10 to USD 50

Processing rate

2.5% to 5% of each payment

Per transaction fee

USD 0.10 to USD 0.35

Gateway fee

USD 10 to USD 30 a month plus USD 0.05 to USD 0.15 per transaction

Chargeback fee

USD 15 to USD 35 per dispute

Rolling reserve

5% to 10% of sales, held for 90 to 180 days

Currency conversion

Around 1% to 2% where conversion applies

Take a USD 29.99 monthly plan at 4% plus USD 0.25. The processing cost is USD 1.45 per renewal, about 4.8% of the price, before gateway fees. On a USD 9.99 weekly plan the same rate costs USD 0.65, or 6.5%, because the fixed fee weighs more on small payments. That is one reason many dating platforms push monthly and longer plans and sell credits in packs rather than one at a time. A clean file with low disputes starts at the lower end of each range, and rates are usually reviewed after six to twelve months. High risk merchant account fees and rates goes through each fee.

Rolling Reserves on Subscription Revenue

A rolling reserve is a share of each day's sales that the acquirer holds to cover future disputes. At USD 50,000 a month in card sales with a 10% reserve held for 180 days, the acquirer holds up to USD 30,000 once the reserve is full, and releases each month's share as its hold period ends. For a subscription business that is real working capital, so plan marketing spend around it. Six clean months are usually enough to ask for a lower percentage or a shorter hold.

What slows a payment gateway for a dating site down is usually the platform, not the paperwork: no cancel option in the account settings, renewal terms hidden below the pay button, or explicit content in member profiles. Fix those before you apply. Setting up a high risk payment gateway covers each step, and how to open a high risk merchant account covers the account side.

A Dating Payment Gateway With Terms in Writing

Know the rate, the reserve and every fee before your first renewal is billed.

  • Rate set out: percentage and per-transaction fee agreed before launch.
  • Reserve on paper: the percentage, the hold period and the review date.
  • Scheme costs visible: no fees tucked inside the processing rate.
  • Settlement dates known: when renewal money reaches your bank account.
  • Terms reviewed: rates and reserve looked at again after clean months.

Chargebacks, Fraud and Romance Scams on Dating Sites

Dispute ratios decide whether a dating merchant account lasts. Acquirers watch them from the first month, and on a Tier 1 account Visa can remove a merchant from its network once disputes reach a critical level.

Why Dating Members Dispute Charges

Most dating disputes do not involve stolen cards. They are renewals the member forgot, a charge they did not recognise on their statement, or a purchase they regret. Some members dispute because they do not want a partner to see a dating charge. Others dispute credits they say never worked, or a plan cut short when their account was banned after reports. Each of these can be prevented at checkout or in your terms, which is why acquirers read your billing flow so carefully.

Stolen Cards and Romance Scammers

The fraud risk on dating platforms is real. FTC Consumer Sentinel data shows that people in the US reported losing USD 1.16 billion to romance scams in the first nine months of 2025, across 55,604 reports. The FTC also found that nearly 60% of people who lost money to a romance scam in 2025 said it started on social media. Scammers still use dating platforms, often paying for premium features with stolen cards so they can message more people. Those payments come back as fraud chargebacks, and victims' complaints can reach your acquirer. Screening at sign-up, 3D Secure on first payments and fast removal of reported accounts handle most of it. Fraud prevention for high risk merchants covers the tools, and transaction monitoring typologies and red flags shows the romance scam patterns banks look for.

Scheme Monitoring Thresholds for Dating Merchants

Under Visa's acquirer monitoring programme, an online merchant in the US, Canada, Europe or Asia Pacific is flagged when fraud and disputes reach 1.5% of transactions and at least 1,500 cases in a month. Mastercard treats 100 chargebacks and a 1.5% ratio in a month as excessive. Acquirers step in well before either line, often around 1%. A merchant closed for excessive disputes can be placed on MATCH. For a payment gateway for a dating site, the dispute ratio is the number to check every week.

How to Keep Dating Disputes Low

Many dating sites use a neutral brand name on card statements for privacy. That works as long as members can still recognise the charge and find you from it, so add a support web address to the descriptor. Send a receipt with every renewal and the reminders Visa requires, and put the cancel button where members look for it. Refund a first-time renewal complaint quickly, since one refund costs less than a chargeback fee plus the lost dispute. Keep login and usage records after each renewal, because they prove the member used the service. Dispute alerts from the card networks let you refund before a chargeback is filed. Chargeback management for high risk merchants covers the alert and evidence tools.

Payment Gateways for Dating Platforms That Scale

Payment gateways for dating platforms need to do more as you grow: bill in more currencies, stop renewals from failing and cover new sites without a new application. Plan for it at the start, because adding it later means going back through underwriting.

Multi-Currency Pricing and Local Payment Methods

Members pay more readily in their own currency, and processing in the member's region usually lifts approval rates. Price each market in local currency, settle in the currencies you have costs in, and watch the conversion margin, which usually runs around 1% to 2%. In some markets cards are not enough. Bank transfers, open banking and local wallets carry a large share of online payments in parts of Europe, Latin America and Asia, and they bring fewer disputes than cards. See international payment gateways and how multi-currency payment gateways work for the options.

Retries and Account Updater for Renewals

Every month some renewals fail because a card has expired, been replaced or is short of funds. Visa Account Updater and Mastercard's Automatic Billing Updater pass new card numbers and expiry dates to you, so the next renewal goes through. For other declines, retry with care. Visa's April 2026 rules forbid any retry after a decline the issuer will never approve, such as a closed account or a card reported stolen, and allow up to 20 attempts in 30 days for the rest. Space retries over several days rather than repeating them within minutes. How smart routing and payment orchestration work explains how retries and routing fit together.

Several Dating Sites Under One Company

Many dating businesses run several brands: niche sites by age, interest or location, or white-label sites for partners. Each website has to be declared to the acquirer, and under Visa's program your registration must be updated when your URLs change. Use a separate descriptor for each brand so members recognise the charge. One application can cover several sites when they share the same company, terms and controls, but a site you add without telling the acquirer can breach your merchant agreement. A payment gateway for a dating website group should report sales and disputes per site, so one weak brand does not put the whole account at risk.

Scale Your Dating Site Payment Gateway Across Markets

Add countries, currencies and new brands without starting a new application each time.

  • New sites declared: extra brands and URLs added to your registration.
  • Fewer failed renewals: retries and card updates set up from day one.
  • Local pricing: members pay in their own currency.
  • Dispute alerts: refund before a complaint becomes a chargeback.
  • Web checkout for apps: send US app users to your own checkout.

Common Dating Site Payment Mistakes

Acquirers that offer payment gateways for dating platforms see the same mistakes again and again. These are the ones that most often cost a platform its merchant account. Most take a day or two to fix, and each one is cheaper to fix before you apply than after a review.

Launching on a Processor That Restricts Dating

An account that opens in minutes and closes at the first review stops every renewal at once, and many members do not come back after a failed payment. Whether Stripe and PayPal allow high risk merchants covers both in detail.

Coding Dating as Software or Social Media

A generic code avoids Tier 1 checks for a few months and then ends in termination and a possible MATCH listing. Declare MCC 7273 from the start.

Letting Adult Content Onto a Dating Platform

Explicit profile photos, paid private content or ads for paid meetings turn a dating site into an adult or escort merchant in the acquirer's eyes. Moderate for them from day one.

Hiding the Cancel Button

A cancel route buried behind chat support or a phone call breaks Visa's rules and California's law, and it is the pattern the FTC pursued in the Match case.

Suspending Members Who Dispute a Charge

Locking an account because the member filed a dispute, while keeping the money, was one of the FTC's charges against Match. Answer the dispute on its evidence and keep account decisions to your safety rules.

Adding Sites or Markets Without Telling the Acquirer

New brands, new countries and new payment models all change your risk profile. Tell the acquirer first, and your Visa registration stays accurate.

Get a Payment Gateway for a Dating Website Approved

One application, and we pick the partner, prepare the file and follow it through to approval.

  • One intake form: tell us about your platform once, we choose the partner.
  • No trial and error: one prepared application instead of several refusals.
  • Straight answer: what is realistic for your model before you apply.
  • Paperwork taken care of: company, website and safety documents prepared.
  • Processing within a week: most dating sites are live in 5 to 7 business days.
  • With you after launch: new sites, new markets and rate reviews handled.

Bottom Line

A payment gateway for a dating site is harder to get than most, because dating sits in Visa's Tier 1 and only a small group of acquirers is approved for it. The platforms that keep their accounts declare MCC 7273, keep adult and escort content off the site, make renewal terms and cancellation plain, remove scammers quickly and treat their dispute ratio as a number to manage every week.

We set up a payment gateway for a dating site through one intake form with a regulated partner that accepts dating, and most platforms are live within 5 to 7 business days. If you also sell software subscriptions outside dating, SaaS payment gateways covers that model.
