Every registry in this guide will take your money in under an hour. Companies House files a digital incorporation in about a day, Hong Kong's e-Registry usually returns a certificate within an hour, and the UAE's federal portal advertises mainland setup in fifteen minutes. That is the part of online company formation that works.
What does not work is the timeline. Three things sit outside the portal and they break the promise every time. Identity verification now gates the filing itself in a growing list of countries. A local gatekeeper, an advocate in Cyprus, a filing agent in Singapore, a contact person in Estonia, sits between you and the register in others. And the bank account, the only part that matters commercially, is still weeks away from the moment your certificate lands.
This guide covers how to register a company online step by step, which registries finish end to end, exactly where the online path stops in the ones that do not, what the EU rules require, and what it costs. For the wider decision of jurisdiction, structure and tax, start with our step-by-step guide to setting up a company.
Register Your Company Online With Binderr
Binderr handles online company registration end to end in the UK, Cyprus and Malta, including the bank account, on a flat fee agreed before anything starts.
- One flat fee: from EUR 350 in the UK, EUR 1,200 in Cyprus, EUR 1,299 in Malta.
- One week to incorporate: name check, filing, corporate pack and registered office.
- Banking in scope: the account is part of the engagement, not a referral afterwards.
- Identity verification handled: including the UK checks that became law in November 2025.
What Online Company Registration Means
Registering a company online means submitting the incorporation application to a national register through a web portal instead of on paper. It does not mean the entire formation is digital. In most countries the filing step is online, and one or more of the steps around it, identity checks, signatures, notarisation, banking, is not.
How Fast the Registry Filing Is
Registry portals are good software now. Companies House WebFiling moved onto GOV.UK One Login on 13 October 2025, so a UK incorporation runs through the same account a founder already uses for tax. Hong Kong's e-Registry processes an online submission in roughly an hour against four working days on paper. Singapore's Bizfile approves most applications almost immediately after payment. Ireland's CORE portal accepts an A1 in a browser.
The registries are not the bottleneck. Treating them as the whole job is what leads founders to start a company in the wrong country, discover the bank will not open an account for it, and pay to unwind a structure that took twenty minutes to create.
What Breaks Online Company Formation
Every failure to complete a company registration online falls into one of three buckets, and recognising which one you are in tells you what to do next.
- Identity verification. The UK made it a legal requirement on 18 November 2025 and Companies House had verified about 3.78 million individuals by 31 March 2026. Verification is a one-off, but it has to happen before the filing goes through, and for a non-resident it can mean a video check or a certified document pack.
- A local gatekeeper. In Cyprus only a practising advocate admitted to the Cyprus Bar Association can prepare and sign the incorporation documents. In Singapore a founder with no Singpass credential files through a registered filing agent. In Estonia a company whose board sits outside the country must appoint a licensed contact person. These are legal requirements, not upsells.
- The bank account. Registration is measured in hours and account opening in weeks. That gap is the real timeline of forming a company, and it is why choosing a jurisdiction on registry speed alone is the most expensive mistake in this whole process.
The rest of this guide takes those three in turn, country by country, with the fees and the current processing times attached.
How to Register a Company Online: 7 Steps
Most published answers to how to register a company online follow the registry's own order. The sequence below is the one that survives contact with a bank. It differs from that standard list in one way: the banking question is answered before the filing, not after it, because the filing is the cheap and fast part and the account is neither.
Steps One to Three: Before You File
- Confirm you can be banked where you plan to register. Ask a provider in that country whether they will onboard your nationality, your residence, your sector and your ownership structure, before you spend anything. A company nobody will bank is an annual maintenance bill with no upside.
- Get your identity verified. In the UK this is a GOV.UK One Login check or a check by an authorised corporate service provider. Elsewhere it is a certified passport copy, a proof of address under three months old and sometimes a notarised or apostilled set. Doing this first removes the most common reason an online filing stalls.
- Reserve the name. Name checks are the one step that is instant almost everywhere. Ireland's CRO was registering name reservations the same day as at 10 August 2026. Cyprus charges EUR 30 and takes two to five working days, or one to two days expedited.
Steps Four to Seven: Filing and After
- File the incorporation. This is the online step proper. Fees and turnarounds are in the comparison table below.
- Collect the corporate pack. Certificate of incorporation, memorandum and articles, register of members and directors, and the beneficial ownership filing where the country runs one. Banks ask for all of it.
- Open the bank account. One to three months in most of Europe. Start it the week the certificate arrives, not the month after.
- Register for tax and VAT. Separate from incorporation in every country here. A UK company is registered but not necessarily VAT registered, and a Cyprus company still needs a tax identification code.
Step | Online? | Typical time | Where it goes wrong |
|---|---|---|---|
Banking pre check | Yes, by email or call | 1 to 5 days | Skipped entirely |
Identity verification | Yes in the UK, mixed elsewhere | Minutes to 2 weeks | Left until after filing |
Name reservation | Yes | Same day to 5 days | Name too close to an existing one |
Incorporation filing | Yes in most countries | 1 hour to 3 weeks | Documents not certified |
Corporate pack | Yes | Same day to 1 week | Incomplete for the bank |
Bank account | Partly | 1 to 3 months | The real timeline |
Tax and VAT | Yes | 1 to 6 weeks | Assumed to be automatic |
Read the table by the third column rather than the first. Six of the seven steps are online, and the two that consume real calendar time are verification and banking, neither of which is on the registry's critical path. Any guide that quotes you a formation time without a banking line is quoting you the easy half.
What to Have Ready Before You File
Most stalled online registrations fail on documents, not on the form. Assemble this pack before you start and the filing itself takes minutes.
- Certified passport copy: for every director and every beneficial owner above the local threshold.
- Proof of address under three months old: a utility bill or bank statement, not a mobile phone bill.
- A registered office you control: a virtual address you cannot receive post at fails the first bank check.
- Ownership chart: who owns what percentage, through which entities, up to the natural persons.
- A plain description of the business: what you sell, to whom, in which countries, and how you get paid.
Countries With Fully Online Company Registration
Four jurisdictions let a founder complete the registration without meeting anyone: the UK, Hong Kong, Singapore where the founder holds a Singpass, and Estonia once the e-Residency card is in hand. Each has a catch, and the catch is never the filing.
UK Company Registration Online
A UK limited company is the cleanest online company formation available to a non-resident. Digital incorporation costs GBP 100 since 1 February 2026, up from GBP 50, and a straightforward application is usually live within about twenty four hours. There is no minimum share capital, no notary and no residency requirement for directors or shareholders.
The catch is verification. Since 18 November 2025 every director and every person with significant control must have a verified identity, which for a non-resident means either a GOV.UK One Login check with a passport and a liveness scan, or verification through an authorised corporate service provider. The second catch is the same one every UK company hits: the incorporation is a day and the business bank account is weeks.
Binderr handles the UK filing, the registered office, the corporate pack, the identity checks and the bank account introduction on one flat fee, agreed before anything starts.

Hong Kong, Singapore and Estonia Online Company Formation
Hong Kong is the fastest registry in this guide. An online incorporation through the e-Registry normally returns the certificate within an hour, against four working days on paper. Incorporation is HKD 1,545 and the one-year business registration certificate is HKD 2,350 since the HKD 150 employees compensation levy resumed on 1 April 2026. The catch is that the company secretary must be resident in Hong Kong, so the online filing still sits on top of a local appointment.
Singapore's Bizfile charges SGD 300 and approves most applications soon after payment, though complex ones take up to fifteen working days and anything needing another authority's approval runs fourteen to sixty days. The gate is the login: filing requires a Singpass or a Corppass, so a founder with no Singapore identity files through a registered filing agent. Add the resident director, at SGD 2,000 to SGD 4,000 a year, and Singapore stops being a cheap online registration.
Estonia is the most genuinely digital of the four and the most misunderstood. The e-Residency application is EUR 150, the card is collected in person at an embassy or pickup point, and the wait is two to five weeks. Company registration is then EUR 265 and takes minutes. But a company whose board sits outside Estonia must appoint a licensed contact person and legal address, roughly EUR 195 plus VAT a year, and letting that lapse can trigger deletion proceedings against the company. Estonia states plainly on its own site that e-Residency status alone does not guarantee access to banking services.

Where Online Company Formation Stops
In Cyprus, Malta and Ireland the registry accepts electronic filings, so every provider advertises online company registration. The filing is online. The steps that decide whether you can use the filing are not, and each country breaks the chain in a different place.
Cyprus Company Registration Online
Cyprus is the clearest example of an online registry with an offline gate. Only a practising advocate admitted to the Cyprus Bar Association can prepare and sign the incorporation documents, so a founder cannot file a Cyprus company themselves however good the portal is. Name approval is EUR 30 and takes two to five working days, or one to two expedited. Registration is EUR 165, or EUR 265 expedited, and stamp duty on Registrar documents was abolished on 1 January 2026.
The upside is that the advocate requirement produces a properly constituted company rather than a shell, which matters when the bank asks. Cyprus corporate tax moved from 12.5% to 15% on 1 January 2026, and dividends from post-2026 profits carry 5% special defence contribution rather than 17%, so the effective position for most holding structures improved even as the headline rate rose.
Binderr runs the Cyprus route through licensed local counsel, so the advocate requirement is handled inside the engagement rather than being a second invoice you find later.

Malta Online Company Registration
The Malta Business Registry has run a modern online platform since 31 August 2023, with corporate account registration and an application for a qualified digital signature built in. That signature is the gate. A Malta filing is electronic, but it has to be signed with a qualified certificate, which in practice means the filing goes through a licensed company service provider rather than the founder.
Registration fees run from EUR 100 where authorised share capital is EUR 1,500 or less up to EUR 1,900 or EUR 2,250 at the top of the scale, and minimum authorised share capital is EUR 1,165 with 20% paid up. Malta's headline corporate tax is 35%, with an effective rate of about 5% for non-resident shareholders once the six sevenths refund is claimed, which is why the jurisdiction survives its own paperwork.

Ireland Company Registration Online
Ireland has the cheapest registry fee in this guide, EUR 50 online through CORE, and the biggest gap between what the portal implies and what happens next. As at 10 August 2026 the Companies Registration Office was processing ordinary A1 online submissions filed on 25 July and Fé Phráinn A1 online submissions filed on 31 July. That is a sixteen day lag on the standard route and a ten day lag on the expedited one, for a filing made in a browser.
The second issue is structural rather than administrative. An Irish company needs at least one director resident in the European Economic Area, or a Section 137 bond with a face value of EUR 25,000, which costs roughly EUR 1,500 to EUR 2,000 every two years. For a founder outside the EEA that is a recurring cost the registry fee gives no hint of. Ireland has no Binderr incorporation product yet, so it runs through advisory.

EU Rules on Online Company Formation
The EU has legislated online company formation twice, and the second round lands during the life of most companies formed this year. Knowing the deadlines tells you which national systems are about to get better and which are already at the standard.
The EU Five Working Day Rule
Directive (EU) 2019/1151 amended the company law directive to require member states to allow limited liability companies to be formed fully online. Article 13g(7) sets the clock: where a company is formed exclusively by natural persons using the state's own template, registration must complete within five working days. In every other case the limit is ten working days. Both run from the later of the completion of the formalities and the payment of fees or share capital.
There are two escape hatches, and they are narrow. Authorities may take longer where there are genuine doubts about the formalities, and under Articles 13b(4) and 13g(8) a member state may require physical presence on a case-by-case basis where there is reason to suspect identity falsification. Every other step of the procedure must still be available online.
Set that against Ireland's sixteen day lag on an ordinary A1 in August 2026 and the gap between the directive and the delivery is obvious. The rule is a useful thing to know when a provider tells you three weeks is normal in an EU member state.
What Directive (EU) 2025/25 Adds by July 2027
Directive (EU) 2025/25 entered into force on 30 January 2025 and must be transposed by 31 July 2027. It extends the digital regime in four ways that matter to anyone registering cross-border: it applies the once-only principle so company data already held by one member state does not have to be resubmitted to another, it puts branch data into the Business Registers Interconnection System, and it creates an EU Company Certificate and a digital EU power of attorney that can be used for registration and closure.
The practical effect is that registering a second company or a branch in another member state should stop being a fresh document exercise. It does not remove the national gatekeepers. A Cyprus advocate will still be a Cyprus advocate in August 2027.
Identity Verification for Online Registration
The single biggest change to how you register a company online is not a portal. It is that registers have stopped taking your word for who you are. This started with the Financial Action Task Force revising Recommendation 24 in March 2022, and national implementations have been landing ever since.
UK Identity Verification and the ACSP Timeline
The UK is furthest along and worth understanding in detail, because its timetable has moved twice and a lot of published advice is out of date. Identity verification for directors and people with significant control has been a legal requirement since 18 November 2025. Companies House had verified about 3.78 million individuals by 31 March 2026.
The next stage, requiring anyone who files on someone else's behalf to be verified and registered as an authorised corporate service provider, has been pushed back to no earlier than November 2027, with Companies House promising at least six months' notice before it starts. ACSP registration costs GBP 55. Enforcement of the existing rules is already live: HMRC and Companies House have issued 50 suspensions and 27 cease orders against non-compliant filing agents.
For a founder registering their own company online none of that changes anything today. For anyone using an agent it is worth one question: are you registered as an ACSP, and who is your AML supervisor. Our guide to choosing a company formation agent has the registers you can check that against in each country.
Identity Verification for Non-Residents
Verification is a one-off exercise, not a recurring one, and it is the step most worth doing before anything else. In the UK a non-resident can complete GOV.UK One Login remotely with a biometric passport, or verify through an ACSP who does the check under the money laundering regulations. In Cyprus, Malta and Ireland the equivalent is the provider's own onboarding, which is a certified document pack rather than a portal.
The direction of travel is one way. Australia has required a Director ID since November 2021 and from 1 July 2027 companies must supply it to ASIC when updating company details. Singapore's Corporate Service Providers Act came into force on 9 June 2025 and pushed nominee arrangements onto registered providers. Choose a jurisdiction as though verification is already there, because within two years it will be.
Online Company Registration Costs and Timelines by Country
Registry fees are the smallest number in company formation and the one every comparison leads with. The table below sets the government fee against the realistic year one figure, which is what actually leaves your account.
Country | Registry fee | Filing time online | Year one all in | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
UK | GBP 100 | About 24 hours | GBP 500 to GBP 1,500 | Identity verification since Nov 2025 |
Cyprus | EUR 165, EUR 265 expedited | 1 to 2 weeks | EUR 3,000 to EUR 5,000 | Advocate must sign the filing |
Malta | EUR 100 to EUR 2,250 | About 1 week | EUR 3,000 to EUR 5,500 | Qualified digital signature needed |
Ireland | EUR 50 | 10 to 16 days in practice | EUR 2,000 to EUR 4,000 | EEA director or a EUR 25,000 bond |
Estonia | EUR 265 plus EUR 150 e-Residency | Minutes, after a 2 to 5 week card wait | EUR 700 to EUR 1,500 | Contact person required, banking not guaranteed |
Hong Kong | HKD 1,545 plus HKD 2,350 | About 1 hour | HKD 15,000 to HKD 30,000 | Resident company secretary |
Singapore | SGD 315 | Same day, up to 15 days if complex | SGD 4,000 to SGD 7,000 | Singpass or a filing agent, resident director |
Delaware | USD 110 | 1 hour for USD 1,000, same day from USD 100 | USD 1,000 to USD 2,500 | EIN takes 4 days by fax or 4 weeks by mail |
Two rows do most of the work here. Ireland has the lowest registry fee and one of the higher real costs once the bond is counted, and Estonia has the fastest filing and the slowest start, because the card that unlocks the filing takes weeks to reach you. Registry fee and total cost are close to unrelated.
Registry Fees vs Year One Costs
Across the eight countries above the government fee is between 2% and 20% of the year one total. The rest is the registered office, the local officer where one is required, the accounting, and the professional fee for whoever does the filing. A provider quoting you a number close to the registry fee is quoting you the filing only, and the rest arrives later.
Our company formation cost guide breaks the year one figure down line by line for nine jurisdictions, and the guide to the best country to register a company in Europe compares them on tax and substance rather than on speed.
Business Bank Account Timelines
The measured position across the market is that account opening, not registration, is where companies stall. Seventy per cent of financial institutions lost clients to slow onboarding in 2025, average account-opening abandonment sits around 10%, and UK corporate banks were running onboarding at more than six weeks. The UK Treasury Committee reported in February 2024 that banks had closed more than 140,000 business accounts in a single year, 2.7% of small business accounts.
That is why the seven steps at the top of this guide start with a banking question. An online registration you complete on Monday is worth nothing until the account is open, and the account is the part no portal can accelerate.
Get the Company and the Bank Account Together
The registration is the fast half. Binderr runs the incorporation and the business account as one engagement so the second half starts the week the certificate lands.
- Accounts and EMIs across the EU and UK: matched to your nationality, sector and ownership before you file.
- Documents prepared once: the same verified pack serves the registry and the bank.
- Realistic timelines: one to three months for a full account, told to you upfront.
- No sales call to see pricing: the fee is agreed before the work starts.
Common Mistakes When Registering a Company Online
These five account for most of the money wasted on online company formation, and all five are avoidable in the week before you file.
Filing First and Asking the Bank Afterwards
The most expensive error in this entire process. A founder registers a company in the country with the cheapest and fastest portal, then discovers no bank in that country will onboard a non-resident in their sector. The company still costs its annual maintenance, the founder still needs an account somewhere, and the fix is either a second company or a dormant one carried for a year. Ask the banking question first and the whole sequence changes.
Treating a Virtual Address as a Registered Office
A mail forwarding address bought for GBP 30 a year satisfies the registry and fails the bank. Compliance teams check whether the registered office is a real place of business and whether hundreds of other companies share it. Finance Uncovered found five agencies had created at least 447 English limited partnerships in a single year across 21 addresses, one of them a barber's shop. Registers now look for exactly that pattern.
Assuming Registration Means You Can Trade
A certificate of incorporation is not a tax registration, a VAT number, a licence or a bank account. In every country in this guide those are separate applications with their own timelines, from one to six weeks. Founders who sign a customer contract on the strength of a certificate spend the following month explaining why they cannot invoice.
Choosing the Jurisdiction on Registry Speed
Hong Kong's one hour and the UAE's fifteen minutes are real numbers and almost irrelevant to the decision. What matters is corporate tax, whether you need a resident officer, whether your customers and suppliers will accept invoices from that jurisdiction, and whether you can get banked. A one hour registration in a country where you cannot open an account is a slower route than a three week registration in one where you can.
Letting a Contact Person or Agent Subscription Auto-Renew
Budget online formation platforms make their money on the recurring line, not the formation. The Estonian contact person, the registered office, the annual filing service and the nominee all renew automatically, often at a higher rate than year one. Read what renews and at what price before you file, because cancelling a contact person in Estonia without appointing a replacement can start deletion proceedings against your company.
Where to Register Your Company Online
Work backwards from the two constraints that cannot be changed after filing: where you can be banked, and where your customers will accept an invoice from. Everything else, tax rate, registry speed, share capital, is negotiable around those two.
Best Countries for a Fast Online Company Registration
If speed and simplicity are genuinely what you need and the business is not sector-sensitive, the UK is the strongest online company formation in Europe: GBP 100, about a day, no minimum capital, no residency requirement and a company form that banks and customers everywhere recognise. Hong Kong is faster still if your market is Asian and you have a resident secretary.
Best Countries for a Long-Term Company
Cyprus and Malta cost more and take longer, and both put a licensed professional between you and the register. That is the point. A Cyprus company at 15% corporate tax with 5% special defence contribution on post-2026 dividends, or a Malta company at an effective 5% for non-resident shareholders, is a structure that survives scrutiny. Neither is a cheap online registration and neither pretends to be.
If you are weighing EU options specifically, our comparison of European company formation agents covers who is licensed to do this work in each country and how to verify it, and the non-resident formation guide covers what changes when you do not live where you are registering.
Not Sure Which Country Fits
If the choice is genuinely open, or the structure has more than one jurisdiction in it, a short call is faster than another comparison table. If you already know you want a UK, Cyprus or Malta company, skip this and start the incorporation.
- Thirty minutes, no cost: the structure, the tax position and the banking route.
- Multi-jurisdiction structures: holding companies, branches and subsidiaries.
- Sector-sensitive businesses: crypto, gaming, payments and anything a bank calls high risk.
- An honest answer: including when the simple single company is the right one.
Online Company Registration: The Short Version
You can register a company online in every jurisdiction covered here, and in four of them you can do it without meeting anyone. The filing is not the problem. The three things that are identity verification, a local gatekeeper where the law requires one, and the bank account, sit outside the portal and account for almost all of the elapsed time and most of the cost.
Sequence it accordingly. Confirm you can be banked, get verified, then file. Budget for the year one number rather than the registry fee, and choose the jurisdiction on tax, recognition and banking rather than on how quickly a certificate appears. Do that and online company registration is genuinely a one week exercise. Do it in the usual order and it is a three month one with an unusable company at the end.
