Top Banks in the British Virgin Islands in 2026

Top Banks in the British Virgin Islands in 2026

The BVI has a small group of licensed banks, all with their main offices in Road Town on Tortola. They offer US dollar accounts, local payments, cards and lending, and every one of them is supervised by the Financial Services Commission. For a business with staff, premises or customers in the islands, a local account is useful.

The hard part is getting in. There are six general banking licensees for more than 354,000 companies, and they ask for a trade licence, a local banker's reference or a large balance. The BVI has also been on the FATF grey list since June 2025, so most BVI banks turn away companies owned from abroad.

This is where we come in. We prepare a complete bank file for your BVI company and open the account with our regulated banking partners, online and in days. There is no branch visit and no large deposit, and you deal with one team from the first document to the first payment.

Our licensed banking partners open multi-currency accounts for BVI companies owned from abroad, online and usually within days.

Why BVI Banks Are Hard for Non-Residents

Banks in the BVI are built for island customers. They take residents, local businesses and a small number of international clients they already know. A new company owned from London, Dubai or Singapore rarely fits their rules, whatever its activity.

A Small Banking Sector for a Huge Register

The Financial Services Commission reported 354,015 active companies at 30 June 2026, against six holders of a general banking licence with about US$2.67 billion in deposits. The banks could not serve the whole register even if they wanted to. They pick customers they can understand and visit.

Local Banks Want a Local Reason

Most local banks ask business customers for a trade licence, a certificate of good standing and a banker's reference from a relationship of at least three years. A trade licence is only needed by a company that does business in the islands, so an international holding or trading company usually has none of these.

Open a Business Bank Account in the BVI

You do not need a local bank to give your BVI company a working account. This is what we handle for you.

  • Complete bank file: Corporate documents, KYC pack and ownership chart.
  • Partner that fits: Matched to your activity and your countries.
  • Fully online: No branch visit and no trip to Road Town.
  • No large deposit: Published plans instead of a minimum balance.
  • Multi-currency: US dollars, euros, pounds and more in one account.
  • Days, not weeks: Most accounts open soon after the file is complete.

The Grey List Adds Questions

The FATF placed the BVI under increased monitoring on 13 June 2025, and it was still listed after the June 2026 plenary. The EU then added the BVI to its list of high-risk third countries from 29 January 2026. Banks inside and outside the islands now ask BVI companies more about their owners, their activity and the source of their funds.

A Refusal Follows You

Banks rarely explain a refusal, and the next bank usually asks whether you have been declined before. Applying to several local banks at once and collecting refusals makes every later application harder. One complete file sent to a provider that accepts your activity works better.

List of BVI Banks in 2026

This list of BVI banks covers every bank that takes deposits from the public in the islands. The table shows who each bank serves and what it publishes. Bank of Asia (BVI) is not on it: joint liquidators were appointed on 22 October 2025.

The table is the BVI banks list most owners need. The low monthly fees look attractive, but they assume a local customer who keeps a balance and makes few international payments. For an international company, the wire fees and the entry rules matter far more.

CIBC Caribbean

CIBC Caribbean is the former CIBC FirstCaribbean International Bank. It took the new name in January 2024, and the legal entity behind the BVI branch became CIBC Caribbean Bank (Cayman) Limited on 18 October 2024. It has a Road Town branch and an International Banking Centre at Wickham's Cay I, plus eight remote tellers on Tortola and Virgin Gorda. It is the most likely bank on this list of BVI banks to take an international holding or trading company, but only with a full file and usually a substantial balance. Introducers quote US$25,000 to US$50,000 for companies owned from abroad. Read about First Bank BVI and CIBC Caribbean business accounts.

Republic Bank (BVI)

Republic Bank (BVI) Limited belongs to Republic Financial Holdings of Trinidad and Tobago. It took over Scotiabank's BVI business on 1 June 2020, with 51 staff and about US$551.7 million in assets. Its business checklist includes a trade licence, a certificate of good standing, a three-year banker's reference, three years of financial statements or projections, a group chart and proof of source of funds. Politically exposed persons must attend the Road Town branch.

FirstBank BVI

FirstBank BVI is a division of FirstBank Puerto Rico, owned by First BanCorp. It arrived in 2002 by buying Chase's Virgin Islands business, including its Tortola branch. Today it runs one branch at Wickham's Cay 1 in Road Town and ATMs at Nanny Cay, the Road Town ferry terminal and the airport. Its BVI accounts are in US dollars and are not FDIC insured.

National Bank of the Virgin Islands

The National Bank of the Virgin Islands is the territory's locally owned bank, based at Wickham's Cay 1 in Road Town. It serves residents, local businesses and the public sector with accounts, loans and mortgages. It is a good fit for a business that operates in the BVI and a poor fit for one that only exists there on paper.

Banco Popular de Puerto Rico runs branches on Tortola and at Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour. The Virgin Gorda branch moved to five days a week on 1 October 2024 and offers wires, deposits, consumer loans and commercial loans by appointment. It serves people and businesses on the islands.

VP Bank (BVI)

VP Bank (BVI) Limited is the Road Town arm of VP Bank of Liechtenstein, at VP Bank House on Main Street. It offers custody, investment advice, wealth planning and services for external asset managers. It is a private bank, not a business account provider, and introducers quote around US$100,000 to start a relationship.

Banks in Tortola, BVI, and Where to Find Them

All the banks in Tortola, BVI, have their main office in Road Town, most of them around Wickham's Cay 1 and Main Street. Virgin Gorda has a Banco Popular branch and CIBC Caribbean tellers, and the smaller islands have no full branch. The full list of banks in the BVI, with their owners and fees, is in the table above.

Local banks work mainly in US dollars, the territory's currency. Accounts in euros, pounds or other currencies are limited or cost extra, which matters for a company whose clients pay in other currencies.

Most banks in Tortola, BVI, keep weekday hours from about 8:30 am to 3:00 pm or 4:00 pm, with business accounts handled by appointment. If a bank asks you to visit, plan for flights through Puerto Rico, St Thomas or Antigua, because there are no direct long-haul flights to the BVI.

The BVI Banks and Trust Companies Act

The BVI Banks and Trust Companies Act 1990 is the law that licenses and supervises every bank in the islands. The current text is the 2020 revised edition, and the Financial Services Commission is the regulator.

The Three Banking Licences

The Act provides for three banking licences: a General Banking Licence, a Restricted Class I Banking Licence and a Restricted Class II Banking Licence. Only a general licensee can take deposits from BVI residents and lend to them. Restricted licensees cannot take deposits from BVI residents, except from other licensees and companies, and cannot invest in claims on BVI residents. Class II licensees are restricted further to named sources of funds.

Capital and Approvals

A general banking licence needs paid-up capital of at least US$2 million, and a restricted licence at least US$1 million. The Commission must approve every director and senior officer and any significant change of ownership. Words such as "bank" and "trust" in a company name need its consent.

Deposit Insurance

Deposits at member banks are covered by the Virgin Islands Deposit Insurance Corporation up to US$100,000 per depositor per bank, with separate cover for joint and trust accounts. Larger balances are at the bank's own risk.

What Is Changing

The government plans to split the BVI Banks and Trust Companies Act into two laws, one for banking and one for trust business. The Throne Speech of 13 January 2026 announced a Banking Bill, a trust and corporate service providers bill and changes to the deposit insurance law. The new rules had not been passed at the time of writing.

Best Banks in BVI by Need

There is no single answer to which are the best banks in BVI. It depends on where the business operates and how much it keeps on deposit.

  • A business operating in the islands: Republic Bank, FirstBank or the National Bank.
  • An international company with a strong file: CIBC Caribbean's International Banking Centre.
  • Private wealth and investments: VP Bank (BVI), with a substantial balance.
  • Staff or premises on Virgin Gorda: Banco Popular or CIBC Caribbean.
  • A company owned from abroad that needs to trade now: Our banking partners, online.

For most international owners, the best banks in BVI are not the right first choice. Most BVI companies bank abroad, and the law does not require a BVI company to hold a BVI account. Read about BVI offshore banking for companies.

A Faster and Cheaper Way to Bank a BVI Company

There is a better route than the Road Town queue. Our regulated banking partners are licensed electronic money institutions built for international companies. They review BVI companies owned from abroad on their merits and open accounts online, usually within days of a complete file.

Documents BVI Banks Ask For

Every bank, local or abroad, asks for much the same file. The difference is how fresh the documents must be and how they are certified.

  • Certificate of incorporation: And the memorandum and articles.
  • Certificate of incumbency: Recent, from the registered agent.
  • Certificate of good standing: Usually under three months old.
  • Registers: Members, directors and beneficial owners, matching the Registry.
  • ID for each owner and director: Certified passport and proof of address.
  • Source of funds: Where the money comes from, with proof.
  • Business plan: What the company does, with clients and suppliers.

Local banks also ask for a trade licence and a banker's reference, and certified copies may need an apostille. We build the file once and check every document before it goes out. Read about BVI company documents and certificates.

Prepare Your BVI Bank File With Us

A complete file is what gets an account open quickly. This is what we prepare for you.

  • Company documents: Certificates and registers, checked against the Registry.
  • KYC pack: Certified IDs and addresses for every owner and director.
  • Ownership chart: Every layer explained in one line.
  • Source of funds: Written up with the proof banks expect.
  • Business profile: Activity, clients and countries set out clearly.
  • One application: Sent to the partner that fits, not to several banks.

What BVI Banks Charge

The monthly fee is the smallest cost at a bank in the BVI. The wires and the balance rules decide what an account really costs an international company.

A company that sends ten international wires a month from a BVI bank can pay $550 to $1,450 a month in wire fees alone. FirstBank gives its wire fees in the schedule handed over at account opening, so ask for it before you apply. How Long It Takes to Open an Account

At BVI banks, opening a business account usually takes three to eight weeks once the file is complete, and longer if the bank wants a visit. With our partners it usually takes days.

What Slows It Down

The usual delays are an old certificate of incumbency, registers that do not match the Registry, an unclear ownership chain and a vague source of funds. At local banks, a missing trade licence or banker's reference stops the file completely.

How to Speed It Up

Ask your registered agent for fresh certificates at the start, check that the registers match the Registry and keep the ownership chart simple. Write down where the money comes from and attach the proof. Answer every question the same day. With a complete file, a partner review takes days rather than weeks.

After the Account Is Open

Fund the account, add your users and share the details with clients. Some partner plans ask for a first deposit within 30 days, and we confirm the amount before you sign.

Banks review the company every year or two. Keep the company in good standing: the annual Registry fee of US$550 by 31 May or 30 November, the annual return with your agent within 9 months of the year end and the economic substance report within 6 months. Tell the bank about changes in owners, directors or activity. Read about BVI company annual compliance and filing requirements.

Why the Company Comes Before the Account

Every bank looks at the company before it looks at the account. A company formed with a clear purpose, a simple ownership chain and fresh documents gets through review far faster than one formed in a hurry and fixed later.

That is why we plan the banking before the company is formed. We agree the structure, form the company through a licensed registered agent from €1,899 and build the bank file at the same time, so the account can open soon after the certificate arrives. Read our BVI company formation guide.

Common Mistakes With BVI Banks

Most refusals come from the approach, not the company.

  • Applying with no local link: Local banks want a reason to bank you in the islands.
  • Applying to several banks at once: Each refusal makes the next one more likely.
  • Sending old certificates: Most banks want documents under three months old.
  • Leaving the source of funds vague: It is the first thing every bank checks.
  • Hiding the real owner: Banks look through nominees and every company layer.
  • Ignoring the wire fees: Ten wires a month can cost more than a year of account fees.

  • Fit checked: Local bank, bank abroad or our partners, for your case.
  • File reviewed: Gaps fixed before anything is sent.
  • Costs compared: Wires, balances and plans side by side.
  • One application: No string of refusals.
  • Clear pricing: Our partners' fees confirmed in writing.

Bottom Line

The current list of banks in the BVI is short. Six banks take deposits from the public: CIBC Caribbean, Republic Bank (BVI), FirstBank, the National Bank of the Virgin Islands, Banco Popular and VP Bank (BVI). All are supervised under the BVI Banks and Trust Companies Act, and deposits at member banks are insured up to US$100,000. They suit businesses that operate in the islands.

For a BVI company owned from abroad, BVI banks are hard to enter and expensive to use for international payments. Our regulated banking partners open multi-currency accounts online in days, with no local reference and no large deposit, and we prepare the file for you.
