How to Open a Gibraltar Business Bank Account in 2026

A Gibraltar business bank account gives a Gibraltar company local sterling banking on UK sort codes, access to euro SEPA payments and a deposit guarantee of up to £120,000 that covers companies. Gibraltar taxes company profits at 15%, only on income earned in or from Gibraltar, and has no VAT and no capital gains tax.

The hard part is finding a bank that will take you. Only nine banks hold a Gibraltar licence, Barclays and Lloyds have left, and the local business accounts are built for island residents or companies registered in Gibraltar and the UK. Paper questionnaires, in-person checks and extra scrutiny for gaming and crypto firms slow things down, and refusals are common.

This is where we come in. We prepare your whole bank file: company documents, ownership chart, source of funds and KYC pack. Our regulated banking partners then open a multi-currency account in days, fully online, with no branch visit and no island residency needed. One team, one point of contact, and we get it done.

Our top-rated, licensed banking providers open multi-currency accounts for Gibraltar companies online, in days, including companies owned from abroad.

Why a Gibraltar Business Bank Account Is Hard for Non-Residents

A business bank account in Gibraltar is hard to get for owners abroad because the island has few banks, and most of them are built for local customers. The banks that remain review each file by hand, ask for paper forms and certified copies, and look closely at sectors Gibraltar is known for, such as gaming, crypto and e-money.

Only Nine Banks Hold a Licence

On 24 September 2026 the GFSC register listed nine banks. Several of them, such as Bank J. Safra Sarasin, Union Bancaire Privée and Turicum, serve private clients or complex structures rather than everyday trading companies. Barclays announced its exit from Gibraltar in 2016, and Lloyds moved its Gibraltar bank to Jersey in 2019. Fewer banks means fewer places to apply, and a refusal leaves little choice.

Local Accounts Are for Local Owners

NatWest International's business account requires all owners, directors and shareholders to live in the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man or Gibraltar, with one layer of ownership and no nominee shareholders. Trusted Novus Bank says it is "not in a position to consider businesses registered outside of Gibraltar and the United Kingdom". A Gibraltar company owned from Dubai, Madrid or Lagos has a short list left.

Open a Business Bank Account in Gibraltar

A Gibraltar company bank account is very achievable with the right partner and a complete file. This is what we do for you.

  • No island residency needed: Our partners onboard owners and directors abroad.
  • Fully online: Identity checks and signatures without a branch visit.
  • Banks slow to onboard: An account in days, not weeks of paper forms.
  • Multi-currency from day one: GBP, EUR, USD and more in one account.
  • KYC pack prepared: We build the file the partner asks for.
  • Avoid a rejection: We check the fit before anything is submitted.
  • No back-and-forth emails: One point of contact who gets it done.

Grey List Years Still Echo

The FATF placed Gibraltar under increased monitoring in June 2022 and removed it on 23 February 2024. The EU kept Gibraltar on its high-risk third country list from 16 March 2023 until 5 August 2025, after the European Parliament blocked the first attempt to remove it. Gibraltar is off both lists now, but correspondent banks and compliance teams still ask more questions about Gibraltar companies than they did before 2022.

Gaming, Crypto and E-Money Get Extra Checks

Gibraltar is known for online gaming, DLT and e-money firms, and banks treat those sectors as higher risk. Gibraltar International Bank says certain industries and business profiles may be charged differently. In 2018, RBS in the UK stopped clearing Gibraltar International Bank payments linked to crypto companies, and a Gibraltar corporate services provider wrote in 2025 that DLT start-ups "still struggle to open basic banking accounts".

Paper Forms and In-Person Checks

Gibraltar International Bank does not open business accounts online. The first step is a corporate questionnaire sent by email, followed by an application form, certified documents and review. Trusted Novus Bank accepts an ID card as both identity and address proof only if the original is shown in a face-to-face meeting.

Accounts Can Be Closed at Short Notice

Opening is not the only risk. In May 2023 NatWest International closed some pooled client accounts in Gibraltar, citing its customer due diligence duties, and gave customers 60 days to move. It said the closures had nothing to do with the grey listing. A company that depends on one local bank has no fallback if that bank changes its view.

Why Gibraltar Business Bank Accounts Get Refused

Most refusals come down to the same gaps. The company is registered outside Gibraltar and the UK and the bank does not take it. The owners live abroad and the account is for residents. The counterparties or countries are not explained. The source of funds is one line. Or the sector is one the bank prices as high risk. Banks rarely explain a refusal, and the next bank will ask about it.

Gibraltar Banks for Business Accounts

A few Gibraltar banks publish business tariffs, and each takes a narrow group of customers. The table shows who they take, who they turn away and what they charge each month.

Bank

Who it takes

Who it turns away

Monthly fee

Gibraltar International Bank

Local and international companies, directly or through approved intermediaries

Applicants expecting to open online

£15, or £100 on professional client accounts

NatWest International

Businesses with owners resident in Gibraltar, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man

Owners abroad, layered or nominee ownership

£12.50 per account

Trusted Novus Bank

Companies registered in Gibraltar or the UK

Companies registered anywhere else

£25, or £75 when serviced by an intermediary

Xapo Bank

Family offices, foundations, businesses and bitcoin miners

Firms controlled from countries it rates high risk

Annual platform fee

The table shows the gap. The published monthly fees look modest, but the banks either take only local owners or charge more once an intermediary or enhanced checks are involved. Moneycorp Bank also offers a corporate multi-currency IBAN account for sole traders, small firms and larger companies.

Private Banks Are a Different Service

Bank J. Safra Sarasin and the UBP Gibraltar branch are private banks. They serve wealthy clients and their structures, with fees agreed individually, rather than trading companies that need everyday payments. Turicum works with complex structures and higher-risk sectors such as DLT firms, mainly through corporate service providers and law firms, and does not publish a tariff.

High Fees on Every Payment

Gibraltar International Bank charges £25 for a SWIFT payment, £15 for a SEPA payment and £25 for CHAPS. NatWest International charges £15 for an electronic SWIFT payment and £25 for a manual one, plus £7 on incoming currency payments. Trusted Novus Bank charges £15 on shared-cost payments abroad and £25 when you pay all the charges.

Wide Currency Margins

Currency conversion is where banks earn quietly. Trusted Novus Bank publishes a margin of 2% on FX payments, in the bank's favour. On €500,000 of supplier payments a year, a 2% margin costs about €10,000 before any payment fee.

Opening, Closing and Enhanced Check Fees

Trusted Novus Bank charges £300 to open a company account and £300 to close it. Accounts that need enhanced due diligence cost at least £100 a month there. Gibraltar International Bank's professional client accounts cost £100 a month. These costs land on exactly the files that non-resident owners bring.

Slow, Paper-Heavy Onboarding

Gibraltar International Bank says a business account can be set up within 14 days once forms and documents are complete. Getting the forms complete is the slow part: questionnaires, certified copies, counterparty details and source of wealth. Xapo Bank says institutional onboarding typically takes three weeks after documents are in.

A Faster and Cheaper Way to Open a Gibraltar Business Account

There is a better alternative to chasing the few local banks. Our regulated banking partners are licensed e-money institutions built for international companies. They open a Gibraltar business account in days, fully online, for owners and directors who live anywhere, with no local residency, no branch visit and no large deposit.

We prepare the file before the partner sees it: the certificate of incorporation, registers, UBO register filing, ownership chart, identity documents, main counterparties and a clear source of funds. Because the file answers the partner's questions upfront, the review happens once.

For a trading, holding or service company that needs to receive and send money across borders, our partners are faster and cheaper. A Gibraltar bank still suits a company with local owners, a need for cash deposits or a need for local lending.

How Client Money Is Protected

Our partners are not banks, so the Gibraltar deposit scheme does not apply to them. E-money institutions keep client money in safeguarding accounts at major banks, separate from their own money, and they cannot lend it out. That protects your balance if the provider itself fails, in a different way from deposit insurance. For a company that uses the account to receive and pay money rather than to store large reserves, it is a fair trade for speed and lower fees.

Which Companies Our Partners Accept

Our partners accept Gibraltar companies with real activity: trading, services, online businesses and holding real investments, with a clear source of funds. Owners and directors can live in most countries, and a Gibraltar company run by owners abroad is routine for them. Some sectors, such as gambling and crypto, sit outside their standard risk appetite, and for those we use a partner built for high-risk sectors. We check the fit before you apply, so you do not collect a refusal.

How to Open a Business Bank Account in Gibraltar Online

Opening the account online takes about half an hour of your time. The directors verify their identity with a passport and a live selfie and sign electronically. We upload the company documents, answer the partner's questions and tell you when the account is live. That is how to open a business bank account in Gibraltar without a single branch visit.

What a Gibraltar Company Needs From Its Account

A Gibraltar company account has a few everyday jobs: paying and receiving sterling, handling euro payments, paying Gibraltar tax on time and selling into the UK and the EU. Knowing which of those matter most tells you what the account needs to do.

Sterling and UK Payments

Gibraltar banks use UK sort codes and send Faster Payments and CHAPS through UK clearing. Gibraltar International Bank uses the sort code 60-83-14. A company that sells mainly into the UK needs GBP account details that UK customers can pay without a SWIFT fee.

Euro Payments and SEPA

Gibraltar is on the European Payments Council's list of SEPA countries, so euro payments can travel at SEPA cost. The UK and EU signed an agreement on Gibraltar on 14 July 2026 that creates a customs union for goods from 15 July 2026. A company that trades with Spain or the wider EU needs an account with real EUR details.

Paying Gibraltar Tax

Gibraltar charges 15% corporation tax from 1 July 2024, only on profits "accrued in or derived from Gibraltar". Payments on account fall due on 28 February and 30 September, and the tax return is due nine months after the month the accounting period ends. The account must hold enough to pay on time.

Deposit Cover for Company Balances

Company money at a Gibraltar bank is covered by the Gibraltar Deposit Guarantee Scheme up to £120,000 per depositor per bank, paid in sterling, and since 1 January 2024 the scheme must pay within seven business days. It lists eight member banks, and deposits of financial institutions, insurers and investment firms are excluded. A company that keeps more than £120,000 at one bank should plan where large balances sit.

Selling Into the UK

Regulated Gibraltar firms rely on temporary UK market access arrangements, extended to 31 December 2026 and due to be replaced by the Gibraltar Authorisation Regime. For most trading companies this does not change the account, but a regulated firm should plan its banking around the new regime.

Steps to Open a Business Bank Account in Gibraltar

To open a business bank account in Gibraltar without delays, work in the same order every time. Each step feeds the next, and a business bank account in Gibraltar opens fastest when nothing is missing at the first review.

  • Form the company: Incorporate through a licensed provider and file the UBO register within 30 days.
  • Check the requirements: Gibraltar business bank account requirements differ by bank, so confirm where the company must be registered and where the owners must live.
  • Collect the company records: Certificate, registers, board resolution and any trade licence.
  • Prepare identity documents: Passports and proof of address for everyone in control.
  • Write down your counterparties: Who you trade with, in which countries and in what share.
  • Explain the money: Source of funds and source of wealth, with evidence.
  • Submit once and answer fast: A complete first submission avoids rounds of questions.

Gibraltar Business Bank Account Requirements

Gibraltar business bank account requirements are much the same at every bank: company documents, identity for everyone in control, and proof of what the business does and where the money comes from. We collect them with you and write the parts reviewers read most closely.

Documents for the Company

Gibraltar International Bank asks for the certificate of incorporation, a certificate of good standing if the company was formed outside Gibraltar more than 12 months ago, the company registers or profile, a board resolution, the trade licence where the activity needs one and the UBO register filing. Trusted Novus Bank also asks for the memorandum and articles and the latest financial statements where the company must file them.

Documents for Owners and Controllers

Every director, shareholder, secretary, signatory and beneficial owner above 25% provides identity and a proof of address. Gibraltar's beneficial ownership register records anyone with more than 25% of shares or votes, filed within 30 days of incorporation. For complex structures, banks want a profile of every intermediate company and a structure chart.

Evidence About the Business

The bank wants to know who you trade with and where. Gibraltar International Bank's questionnaire asks for your main counterparties and countries by percentage, any exposure to high-risk countries, and your sector and licences. Add contracts, invoices or a business plan, plus your source of funds and source of wealth.

Certification

Gibraltar International Bank accepts copies certified by bank officials, lawyers, accountants, notaries in the UK, Europe, the USA or Canada, consular officials and government officials. With our partners, identity checks run online, which removes most personal certification.

Prepare Your Gibraltar Company Bank Account File

A Gibraltar company bank account opens fastest when every document is ready before the first review. We prepare it with you.

  • Company records: Certificate, registers and UBO filing in one pack.
  • Ownership chart: Every layer shown, down to the people at the top.
  • Counterparties explained: Who you trade with and where, in plain words.
  • Source of funds written: In the format reviewers expect.
  • Online identity checks: Passport and selfie, no notary for most owners.

For a business bank account in Gibraltar, the monthly fee is the smallest cost. A company that sends ten SWIFT payments a month at £25 pays £250 a month in payment fees alone, before a 2% currency margin. A Gibraltar bank can be cheaper for a local company that pays local suppliers in sterling and uses cash. For an international company, our partners cost less overall. All figures are planning ranges drawn from published tariffs, and we confirm your final price in writing before you apply.

How Long a Gibraltar Business Bank Account Takes

A business bank account in Gibraltar takes up to 14 days at Gibraltar International Bank once the forms and documents are complete, and the paperwork before that often takes weeks. With our partners, the account usually opens in days once we have your documents.

What Slows It Down

The usual delays are an incomplete questionnaire, missing certified copies, counterparties not explained, a certificate of good standing that is out of date and a source of funds that is one line long. High-risk sectors add a further review.

How to Speed It Up

Collect certified copies and the UBO filing at the start, write down your counterparties and source of funds with proof, and answer questions the same day. If your company is in gaming, crypto or e-money, gather your licences and a description of your payment flows before you apply, because those are the first questions.

What Happens After the Account Is Open

After the account opens, fund it, add your users and share the account details with customers. Some partner plans ask for a first deposit within 30 days, and we confirm the amount before you sign.

Keep the company in good standing, because banks check it at every review. The annual return costs £103 if filed on time and £257.50 or more if late. Changes to beneficial owners must be filed within 30 days. The company files its tax return nine months after the month the accounting period ends and makes payments on account in February and September.

Tell your bank or partner about new owners, new sectors or a big change in volumes, and keep your documents current for periodic reviews.

Why the Company Comes Before the Account

A bank can only verify a Gibraltar company once it exists on the register, with a company number, a certificate of incorporation and registers on file. Standard incorporation normally takes about three working days. If you do not have the company yet, we form it with our licensed Gibraltar partners and prepare the bank file while the company is formed.

Common Gibraltar Business Bank Account Mistakes

Most problems with a Gibraltar business bank account start with the file or the choice of bank, not the company. These are the mistakes we see most.

Applying to a Residents-Only Account

The simple local accounts need island-resident owners. An application from owners abroad is refused, and the refusal follows the company.

Forming the Company Outside Gibraltar or the UK

Some Gibraltar banks do not consider companies registered elsewhere. Check the bank's rules before choosing where to incorporate.

Leaving Counterparties Vague

Gibraltar banks ask who you trade with and in which countries. "Various clients" is not an answer.

Hiding a High-Risk Sector

Gaming, crypto and e-money firms are reviewed more closely. Saying so upfront, with licences, is faster than being found out.

Sending Old Certificates

A good standing certificate or proof of address that is out of date sends the file back. Order fresh copies at the start.

Get Help With a Gibraltar Company Bank Account

Gibraltar banking is very manageable when the bank and the file are chosen together. Talk to us before you apply.

  • Fit checked first: We confirm a partner can bank your company.
  • High-risk sectors: We route gaming and crypto files to the right partner.
  • Refused before: We review the file and fix the gaps.
  • Honest advice: We tell you when a local bank is the better fit.
  • One point of contact: From the first call to the first payment.

Bottom Line

A Gibraltar business bank account is harder to open than a Gibraltar company is to form. With nine licensed banks, local accounts built for residents and extra checks on the sectors Gibraltar is known for, many owners abroad face long waits or refusals.

For most Gibraltar companies that trade across borders, the faster route is a regulated partner that onboards owners from anywhere. With a complete file, a multi-currency account opens in days. A local bank still makes sense for a company with island owners and regular cash needs. Knowing how to open a business bank account in Gibraltar, and where not to apply, saves weeks.
